I agree with the OP (after he cleared up his point). It's not that being C+F is bad, it's relying on canned matterial will get you into trouble. Using canned matterial is something a robot would do. If you run into a situation where the material doesn't quite fit, you will either shut down (like a robot might) or you will roughly try to fit a square peg into a round hole. Either way, you are done.
If you however are a humanbeing that is capable of free thinking, you will be able to adapt to any situation, and make use it for your interaction. Instead of using someone elses material, you'll make up your own on the spot.
I can tell you that there is a world of difference between using C+F, and being ****y and funny. As others have said, the former is a technique to cover ones short comings, and the later is a state of being.
I don't "use" techniques. I am naturally funny, and the "techniques" just happen on their own.
You can learn to be funnier, but not through the use of canned material. You want to learn to be funnier, don't just focus on what is being said exactly, you have to work on timing, body language, what kind of material is funny. Then you have to consider what material fits into your persona, even if it's funny, it'll be akward if it's not natural to you (think Seinfeld if he did a race joke). You also have to have a good sense of irony, because irony is fundamental to a good joke.
I reccomend that everyone who wants to get funnier start watching, Colbert, Daily show, Chris Rock, Seinfeld, Rodney Dangerfield, Old SNL, Old Jim Carey stand up routines, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook(tho I think he beats some of his jokes to death), Robin Williams routines, and for fvcks sakes stay away from Zoolander!
There is your home work for the semester. Ace this and you'll be scoring double D's for sure.
