For what it's worth...

"Is there a cure for HPV?
Since HPV is a virus, there is no cure. However, new studies indicate that approximately 70-90% of people with HPV may clear the virus from the body within two years of infection. Re-infection is possible. "

I was paraphrasing the exact document you quoted from, which lists oral sex as a "low-risk practice."

I didn't say "no-risk". I mean, the truth is, every time you bang someone, you run that risk. Even if she's been tested, it's possible the test may give a false negative.

That's the risk you take with sex. Even if you're with a steady girl, all it takes is one cheating ex-boyfriend...or a "mistake" with some guy she met on Spring Break with her friends in Cancun that she never told you about.

Them's the dice. Either roll 'em or keep it in your pants. The best you can do if you're gonna be having sex is to wear a quality latex condom and "mitigate risk" to whatever level you can.

Believe me, though, it's gotten to the point that when I hook up with a girl, I'm CONSTANTLY worrying about STD potential...to the point where I'm just about done with casual sex altogether. So it's not like I don't "get the message".

OK Mr. Wiseguy (although I do understand you are a moderator and are trying to protect people), why exactly are there an underestimated 25% of the population with herpes?! AIDs may claim hundreds of thousands, but herpes, although much less deadly, is more common, and easier to get. You can get it easily from skin-skin contact as stated and you can get oral herpes from simply KISSING someone with the sore on their lip, but as previously noted, HIV is usually transferred via blood so it is not as easy to catch; vaginal secretions and semen and the other bodily secretions are less likely to cause it but still very dangerous. Believe what my friends told me? Um, just so you know, I have never and will never believe anything a "friend" tells me because most friends are full of shi-t. I have done plenty of reading, trust me.

Ok, looks good. I was just worried that you didn't get it. It looks like you understand the basics of STD's. I take this seriously because so many people have died because of ignorance and misconceptions. There are many myths about AIDS/HIV. I just wanted to be very clear about this particular STD.

People just refuse to believe that they can get AIDS.

Well, all but one of your images didn't work, but I know what you mean. Paradox, I appreciate the fact that you care about others and want to keep this pandemic under control, but in my mind, it isn't just AIDs that worries me. You gotta give herpes the respect it deserves :) and that was all I meant by my above paragraph. If you want to keep an active sex life, you must get tested with your partners, for everything. Yeah, it seems really awkward, but you can't be too careful. I would probably at least have a look at her vagina before I fingered it (just to make sure there are no obvious signs) and I would go that far, but oral and intercourse would come only after testing. And fellas, getting "head" (oral from woman) is also very risky. A lot of people just do it with every hoe they meet, but that is not a really good idea. Like I said, a herpes sore on the mouth (even possibly when not visible or during a time of outbreak) can easily infect your penis. Besides this there are other STDs transmitted orally. But Paradox is right of course, don't just listen to what your friends tell you about STDs, learn the facts yourself and you will be much safer.

NOW I'm paranoid about sex diseases

Christ a friend of mine got tested and he's got a pretty serious sex disease!

Sh1t I'm damned scared. I've never done a one-night stand, and always used a condom, but still this is pretty damn scary. Just think, you get it ONCE, and your sex life is effectively over.

I think from now on, I'm going to ask women to get tested before any kind of sex. Since I'm a LTR guy it can't be too hard, but I've just got to resist temptation at parties, regardless of how hot the chick is.

I've never asked women to get tested before, I always felt it spoilt the mood (since most women I get laid with do it on the spur of the moment), but I guess safety is more important than a bit of quick sex.

I could hook up every weekend if i wanted to, but i'm to the point where i refuse to sleep with a female unless we both have a test done.

People lie on a daily basis, so i'm not going to take some broads word unless i have some sort of medical evidence. 20 minutes of fun isn't worth a potential lifetime of misery and pain.

Anyway, what kind of std you would want her to get tested on?
You probbaly want to tell her specifically what kind of test she should pass, right?

I go to local bars and clubs. I use to do a lot of approaching (I mean alot 25 -50 approaches a week), but now I must have some sort of confident, positive aura because I now have women coming up to me.

I actually get more women now, then I did when I was in college. I use to put a lot of unnecessary pressure on myself trying to attract women. The moment I developed the "I don't give a fuk" attitude, is when my success started to happen.

I guess a blood test can catch all STD's, although I’m not 100% sure.

Local bars and clubs? Dude, you must look like a... local god :)
Seriously - it is easy to go to a bar yes, but to actually find somebody decent there AND open her AND fvck her - is not very trival. And there is it all about your looks.....you are lucky one.
Did you refer to 25-50 approaches in club\bars, right?

Anyway, back to the topic:
I dont know why, but they dont need blood test for all stds.
But this doesnt really matter.. what matter you have to know what stds you want her to get tested on, otherwise she'll go, get a blood test for just one of them and that's it. There are about up to 10 main stds and I guess they do not test all of them "by default, moreover they cannot test all of them with just one drop of blood. She should know beforehand what kind of tests to take... and we, guys, should tell women what to do....

Does anyone have established testing plan for women?

Come on, you can't just tell a girl "I want you to get a blood test before we do it..".. shes basically gonna take it as you think she's a *****.

Most agree that to get tested is a good idea.
But get tested on what kind of std? All of them?
I guess we should be specific at it.

About her get offended. Try to reframe it:
"I usually get tested once a year. It is about time now... wanna join me?"

She will follow you...women are followers.
She may freak out, yes, but eventually she'll get that what you are saying about std testing makes sense for both of you and she'll accept it.

If she freaks out with "Who do you think I am? blah blah..."
Dont argue, do not apologize, do not kiss her feet\ass, simply repeat:
"...I usually get tested once a year. It is about time......."

Yes, get tested for all of them. Especially HIV. It is ridiculously important that you know whether or not your future sexual partner is carrying this.

Sexually transmitted diseases can be overstated.

For instance, herpes was once considered a major STD but now is basically considered a nuisance. About 90% of people have oral herpes (and someone with oral herpes can transmit genital herpes if they give oral sex while having a cold sore outbreak). Few ever know about it because about 90% of that 90% of people with herpes are asymptomatic. If those 90% of people who have a disease, the disease never really hurts them in any serious manner, then who cares it’s not that big a deal. Sure, a few people suffer severe cases which can cause severe health problems, but that is a small fluke segment of the infected population. It’s intriguing how since most people are exposed at a tender young age, virgins who have never gone near a girl can still give an “STD” if the timing is right.

Another overstated case is AIDS. Do not let me be misunderstood, the effects of AIDS are not overstated but are the chances of exposure. People say that everyone can get AIDS; that AIDS doesn’t care who you are, how much money you make, how old you are, what religion you are; that everyone is at equal risk. But according to the Centers for Disease Control, nine out of ten cases of (men getting) AIDS are a result of either gay sex, intervenous drug use, or a combination of gay sex and intervenous drug use. So, don’t have gay sex, don’t shoot drugs into your veins, don’t have sex with someone who has gay sex or shoots drugs into their veins, don’t have sex in Africa, and chances are overwhelming you are safe.

Way to ruin the mood here, haha.... the testing phenomenon was about to finally catch on and sweep the nation, sooner or later eliminating the known STDs. I do not doubt your statement that 90% of the population has oral herpes, but now the terms oral and genital herpes are used interchangeably since they are spread by oral sex in many cases, but genital herpes is supposed to be worse.... but it is actually possible to have genital herpes on your lips or oral herpes on your genitals.... that's how closely related the two viruses are. As I said, genital herpes is the absolute worst of the two, so don't think for one minute that just becaues 70%-90% of the population has ORAL herpes, that you have no risk for something worse. Just thought I would point that out. Now, as I have already stated, the bacterial infections are all curable if you detect them early on (shows importance of frequent testing), but the viral infections (herpes, HIV, HPV (warts)) are not. It is obviously important to test for EVERYTHING. A blood test should cover almost all of them; a pap smear on the girl or urine test is only capable of detecting so many.... I can't remember the specific ones off the top of my head, so just tell them when you are going to get tested you want to test for EVERYTHING, simple as that. In addition, viruses have the ability to "hide" in the body and go through a period of latency (during which time you think you are fine.... an interesting thing to note here is HIV can remain latent for up to like 5 years). For herpes, you should get a type-specific blood test for it, so you can tell if it is oral herpes (which many already have) or genital. Doesn't matter how many dam-n tests it takes.... there is no reason or excuse not to. And as for your comment about most people having no symptoms.... well, all I have to say is, what if you're one of the unlucky ones? I seriously doubt the majority of genital herpes infected individuals have no symptoms.... even though that is the case for oral. But you all are right: you get it, you got it for life. Your sex-life would be constantly plagued by your fear of having to tell the girls you meet you have something, and not only that, if you have ANY conscience at all, you will fear that you might infect them or feel guilt for putting them at risk. Guess what? Just because YOU feel no symptoms doesn't mean SHE won't, and vice-versa. I still say if you get a girl to the point of wanting to have sex with you, your chances of ruining it by insisting on getting both of you tested are very slim. And don't forget HIV testing either. Be careful.

Yes, the fact that there are two different types of herpes, preferring different body parts but can still cross-contaminate, does confuse many people.

About two weeks ago I engaged in my first ever one-night stand. It struck me about a week later how potentially dangerous was the activity, like if something slipped accidentally knocking the girl up, but it simultaneously occurred to me I shouldn't worry about it that much because I used a condom. We both exchanged oral gratification, but if by some chance she had genital herpes and was asymptomatically shedding (because her pussy looked healthy), then no big deal because I am pretty sure I already have oral herpes (about once a year I have cold sores)(even when I was a virgin). If she was actively shedding oral herpes, I cannot rule out a chance because for that activity I received without wearing a condom.

Tonight after making my original post I pondered the question: if I had to choose, would I rather have genital herpes or get a girl pregnant? I would rather have genital herpes. I would rather take the 90% chance of being asymptomatic (or, if I was so unlucky, suffering the occasional nuisance outbreak) than to take the 100% chance of unending child support for eighteen years. Sure, genital herpes can be bad enough but nowhere near the disease of having an unwanted kid.

If you do a Google search on “genital herpes asymptomatic” you will find rather universal consensus. Here for example is a quote from herpesonline.org:
The most extensive study on the prevalence of genital herpes thus far has been The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The method in the NHANES survey was to draw blood from 40,000 people who would represent a cross section of the U.S. population, and to test these blood samples for a variety of medical conditions. One of the tests employed identified the presence of herpes simplex virus type 2, the type most commonly associated with genital herpes. The NHANES results for 1991 showed that 22% of the U.S. population over the age of 12 were positive for HSV-2. Even more surprising were the number of people who were HSV-2 positive that were symptom free. It was through this study that it was found that 90% of those infected were completely unaware of their herpes status.

A number of smaller studies using similar specialized blood tests have very comparable results in that 80% to 90% of those who have an HSV-2 infection report no history of symptoms. In ongoing studies, researchers took the testing a bit further to build a profile of those who were apparently asymptomatic. They spent time educating the subjects using photographs to show examples of types of signs and symptoms that could be associated with genital herpes. This educational process resulted in 62% of those who had initially reported no history of symptoms were reporting that they could now recognize some possible signs of a herpes infection.
Taking the last paragraph into consideration, perhaps about a third are truly asymptomatic but that for the rest of population the symptoms are so minor as to conventionally go unnoticed.

Good post, I definitely learned something there.... definitely a known fact by now that around 1/4 the population has HSV-2. But STILL, knowing my luck, I would probably end up being the 1 out of 10 people who has bad symptoms.... and even though it is pretty controllable now with all the treatment available, it would still be a pain. Statistics just never do it for me, even though they tell you your chances of having an upleasant experience are relatively low, it is kinda a false sense of security. If you got the cold sores then there is no doubt you got the oral herpes, but then again, nowadays the majority of the pop. has them. I doubt most people have the ability to even think about STDs when there is a beautiful girl in front of them, naked, and ready to please you. You are right in that some things in life aren't worth the trouble to worry about. But anyway, this doesn't mean testing is pointless.... you should still test if you are active just in case so if you do get something you can catch it early and either cure it or lessen its ill effects. Pregnancy over genital herpes? No way man... pregnancy I guess you have to pay the child-support, but that doesn't harm your life like sympomatic herpes does. Besides, wear a condom and your chances of getting her pregnant or getting gen. herpes is really really low... kill two birds with one stone. I don't see why you would even take the chance of getting her pregnant anyway. I wouldn't even trust her if she says she takes birth control, some girls lie about that for some crazy reason. So I just recommend wearing a condom until 1.) you get the both of you tested and 2.) you are sure she takes birth control. Needless to say, LTR are definitely the safest.

You are quite right.

I agree.
Pregnancy over genital herpes? No way man... pregnancy I guess you have to pay the child-support, but that doesn't harm your life like sympomatic herpes does.
It has been estimated that it costs about $100,000 to properly raise one kid for eighteen years. Hospital bills, doctor and dentist appointments, food, clothing, toys, schooling, etc., for eighteen years, and it adds up to roughly $100,000 per kid. That is $460 a month, every month.

On the other hand, as we have established, for genital herpes most people are either asymptomatic or the outbreaks are so minor they are totally unaware they have it. The outbreaks are sporadic rather than a frequent and regular rash of having to fork over $460 to support an unwanted kid. That was my thought process.
Besides, wear a condom and your chances of getting her pregnant or getting gen. herpes is really really low... kill two birds with one stone. I don’t see why you would even take the chance of getting her pregnant anyway.
I agree. However, to be certain, the hypothetical question I had posed to myself was if something had to go wrong, which outcome would be the lesser of two evils.
