Lessons. Practice. Playing with others. Doing those 3 things regularly will go a long way to helping you become an accomplished musician.

ok guys..

i think i'm an alright singer.

very interested in rock music.

think i've got what it takes to be in a band.

(will more then likely never try).

but how long would it take too learn to play the guitar well enough to start writing music?

for a 21 year old with no musical experience :)

cheers fellas.

curiosity.
Depends. Many mainstream punk, alternative, hard rock, and nu-metal bands of today use simple song structures, while many rock and metal bands of today and yesterday use much more complicated stuff. It's all dependent on what kind of style you do.

Just start playing and set a goal to learn the tough stuff you like. Do you like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, Testament, Dream Theater, etc? Practice to meet your tough goals, and you will end up finding it easy to write and play some of the simpler music.

If you're gonna get books, get your hands on John Petruccis' "Rock Discipline", and Troy Stetinas "Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar". Both excellent value, regardless of the style you're heading for.

But seriously, hook in with a few guys at your level. PM me if interested and i'll direct you to a local muso message board.
