I find this article interesting, I sensed my own narcissistic tendencies sprouting and decide to go cold turkey. No difference in my life was made. Results may vary.

According to new psychological research, teens who spend too much time on social networks like Facebook, are more likely to show narcissistic tendencies and display signs of other behavioural problems.

The findings of the research were presented by Larry D. Rosen, professor of psychology at California State University, at the 19th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association. In a talk entitled ‘Poke Me: How Social Networks Can Both Help and Harm Our Kids’, Rosen explained the potential psychological risks for teens who spend too long on social networking services.

"While nobody can deny that Facebook has altered the landscape of social interaction, particularly among young people, we are just now starting to see solid psychological research demonstrating both the positives and the negatives,” he said.

Rosen said the negative effects of teenagers overusing social media include making them more prone to vain, aggressive and anti social behaviour.

Scientists have found pre-teens and teens who overuse social sites and technology on a daily basis are also more likely to be prone to bouts of anxiety, depression and other psychological disorders.

Excessive use of sites like Facebook can also lead to poorer academic performance. Teenagers who checked social networks at least once during a 15 minute study period, achieved lower grades, scientists found.

However, Rosen’s study also found that social networking had some positive effects . Sites like Facebook can help shy young adults socialise and come out of their shell. And the services can be used effectively for interactive learning and helping teenagers empathise with each other.

Science Daily, an online science journal, said that Rosen encouraged parents to assess their children’s activities on social networks and discuss with them any decisions to remove inappropriate content – rather than going behind their back.

not here. in the real world.
I agree, one of the best things I've done is get rid of my social networks...my social networks are called REALITY and they include REAL LIFE interaction...this forum is about as digitally-social I get these days...I've found removing myself from things like facebook, etc, has helped my social life, and also allowed me to lose track of a lot of people whose daily gossip isn't really my concern anyways.

I promise you, your real friends will still be your real friends even if your facebook-self slips into the void.

I remember posting of pof and never getting a response and the ones who responded were saying that they got 300 replies a day and so forth. I wonder why a beautiful woman uses these sites? It's not really beneficial Imo...

Obviously it's just a ego boost they get out of it?

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

Facebook is to women what world of warcraft is for nerds, just a way to present a better self, where you simply can be who you want.

Just like the short skinny nerd can be a 7 feets muscly ork the young girl can take 100 pictures and upload the 3 where he ass doesnt look big and her eyes look good.

Everybody is faking there, pretending to have fun in many parties with the same seriousness of a samurai serving his emperor, group of girls who go out and spend the night by themselves onyl to take pictures for the following day.
If they dont get any "like", depression arise forcing them to try hard, then there is the social warfare where if someones ignore your picture you ignore his messages as a punishment.

Those with a simple life risk depression themselves looking at other people's life who seems to be so adventurous and full.
The race to the 1000 friends is not different from the race to lift 100kg on the bench press, where humand become number to serve a narcisistic desire.

Social networks did more harm than good simply because most of the people before thinking about job or family think about their ego.

Facebook is not about "see what my friends are doing" it's about "look at me".

Beautiful women use those sites because most men in this country (United States) are too wimpy and emasculated to even approach women anymore. At least that goes for my age group. (from what I've seen)

And your age group is 40-55? Im dont live in the usa but according to the guys in this forum even ugly ones get approaced from dozen guys.

Probably they use those sites the same way a crack user use pot, waiting for the big deal at the club just to kill some time.
