Hey guys, I don't post in the H&F forum often, but I got a question (obviously.) Is there a way to slow down ones metabolism? I was a measely 135 pounds right now. Don't tell me to eat more, I eat like a horse. Just last night, I had 9 1/2 prime ribs for dinner (all you can eat special) and that's a typical dinner. Thing is, I won't even gain an ounce. Any suggestions?

You might be eating a lot in one meal, this will not do the job. You need to eat a minimum of 6 meals a day (are you eating a meal every 2-3 hours of the day?) , and eat healthy.

I eat 6 real meals a day and they are all healthy. I also throw in some snacks (tuna sandwhich, pizza from Little Ceasers on Wensdays for $3.) I'm just hungry all the time. I also followed DIESEL'S Bulking plan for 4 months and gained ONE pound.

Go see a doctor. There are medications that can slow your metabolism down.

Like I said, my guide was designed to give you a ballpark figure from WHERE TO BEGIN. Your body is telling you that is not enough.

YOU HAVE TO EAT EVEN MORE.

BTW, 9 prime ribs isn't a lot of food.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

The secret for a guy like you is LIQUID CALORIES

I started out just like you did crazykid.

Eating enough food to grow makes me literally ill. I feel bloated, sleepy, and sometimes even dizzy if I try to take all my calories as solids. Stop trying to EAT that much. Eat 6 or 7 good meals each day and load up on raw calories by DRINKING them. Move your carbs to your last meal. Last thing you do from now on before brushing your teeth before bed is to slam down a milkshake. I keep a bucket of bluebunny and a gallon of milk on hand at all times for those shakes. During the day, soda and cool aid are your friend. Do at least three whey shakes a day and mix them double strength. If that doesn't work, make it TWO milkshakes before bed. Investing in a juicer is a good idea too. Get those mega 5 pound bags of mixed veggies at walmart or sams for juicing. You can drink more carrots and green beans etc than you can eat. Drink the pulp too. Swish it around in the glass so it makes a slurry. Tastes like **** but it is the only way you are going to get enough food down your gullet. Believe me, I've been there.

Don't panic. It gets easier once you start growing. Your stomach and appetite will grow to match your needs.

It seems hard but you are actually one of the lucky ones. All you are going to have to do to cut is lose the milkshakes and move your carbs to earlier meals.

135#? I'll lay odds you are doing mostly machine and pulley work instead of freeweights. When I first hit the gym, I was 5'11" and 124#. Friends called me Skeletor. I didn't use FW because I couldn't. There wasn't enough strength to hold any type of form for more than 2 reps on most exercises even using those ***** 5# girl dumbells. I got outlifted by elderly women who were doing surgery rehab. I literally fainted from overexertion doing curls my second week (important lesson, don't hold your breath when straining.) Sound familiar?

Tell you how to overcome that. Ignore building size for awhile and work on raw strength. For upper body exercises, use a weight that you can comfortably do 10 reps on. Do those ten and immediately reduce the weight by ten and do an immediate ten more. Drop the weight by ten and do ten more until you do ten with just the bar. Next week, try starting out 5 pounds heavier. For legs, do the same except do 20 reps all the way down the rack. (Ignore anyone who laughs at you when you start whimpering like a whipped dog and keep pushing, down the rack on legs is going to HURT) In two or three months you'll be ready to take on the freeweights, only at about half the weight the machines say you are lifting. Focus on working big muscles. Chest (no flys on a machine - useless), tricep (pulldown - use the rope), bicep (EZ bar and STAND UP), lats (pulldowns - one set each with narrow then wide grip), quad, ham. You can't build strength anywhere else on a machine so don't waste one single precious calorie trying.

And don't give up. Not quite four years later I'm up to 185#. That's 61 pounds or over 15 pounds a year. You can be over 150# by this time next year if you drink some extra meals and keep lifting.

Thanks man. I'll have a shake while replying...There we go... Anyway, as far as the weights go, I use only free weights, except the tricep pushdown and lat pulldown. I increase the weight every week and have gotten a lot stronger, but not bigger.

Like Diesel said, if what you are eating is not working, eat MORE. If your metabolism is fast, keep up with it. Gaining weight is all in eating ...

Also: KEEP A FOOD DIARY OF WHAT YOU EAT - AND ADD UP THE CALORIES. If you're not gaining weight it's because you ARE NOT GETTING ENOUGH CALORIES. Simple as that.

You may think you are eating a lot, but add the calories.. I'll bet you'll be surprised it's not as much as you think it is.

You can also try eating your meals dry. If you take a swallow of whatever beverage you have in front of you between bites your stomach fills up faster. Pack in all the solids you can before taking a single sip (takes discipline but it becomes habit in three weeks.) I find that after I'm already so stuffed I can't bear to eat another bite, I can still drink another entire meal's worth of calories.

Make sure you get your minimum protein needs FIRST. After that, drink as many calories in fats and carbs as you can. It's all about the raw calorie count for us hardgainers. And more calories fit in your glass than on your fork.

FYI, the reverse works wonders for cutting. Drink two or three tall glasses of water five minutes before you eat. You suddenly find the urge to eat like a stoner at taco bell has been sated.

Sweet trick! I don't drink that much while eating anyway, it's usually after, and that is hard to do since most of my food is pasta and the likes (I'm Italian.)

Lift heavy and not too often

I've been cursed with the same problem, crazykid, and am finally breaking through using the following regimen:

Working from the Anthony Ellis principle that mass gain occurs during the recovery phase, I only lift about once every week to 2 weeks as follows:

1. Warm up with a bit (usually playing drums).

2. Lift close to maximum weight for about 8 exercises for 2 sets.

3. Same exercises, one set with lighter weight (about 6-8 reps).

4. Eat a high-protein meal.

So far this weird lazy man's regimen is smashing a plateau I couldn't budge for years.

I also take L-glutamine, creatine, glucosamine sulfate, and well-rounded multi-vitamin/mineral supplements. But those are extras, and not so important for someone who's younger. A good protein powder may help to get some quick protein in your system immediately after the workout. I use ion-echange whey protein for that.

The important thing is not to lift when your muscles are still sore. 100% recovery is the key, because during recovery is when muscle mass is built.

I find that upper body exercises are not much use for bulking up. It's all about what happens on leg days. If your chest, arms, etc aren't growing it is most likely because you aren't giving enough on leg days. I only do squat, dead, and leg press (that order) on leg days now. 4 sets of 20 each and stumble out to the car like a cripple. (If you don't have wobbly legs after, you didn't do it right) I'm beginning to wonder if it would be possible to eliminate upper body exercises all together and still get the same or better results. Seems like I burn a lot of fuel on upper body work for a lot less productivity.

Maybe I'm blowing smoke out my arse on that point but believe me on the legs part. If you want to grow, do your squats and deads.
