I happen to like shrimp but everytime I eat it my upper lip swells like a bee stink or punch and it stays this way for about two hours very annoying.

My question is this it has been several years since eating this purticular shrimp from Lone John Silver and wonder just maybe what caused my upper lip to swell was the processing or what they use in the shrimp. Anyway, I was thinking about trying some you see at Wal-mart in the see through plastic which isn't cooked or anything and see what happens.

Anyone else have this problem? I want to get other protein sources outside of red meat and switch it around like red meat this week and seafood next like salmon, tuna, shrimp etc., I hear this is a good idea and shrimp is the one I want to try again.

I'd see a doctor about it if I were you. You could be allergic. Sometimes if you're allergic to one thing you're more likely to be allergic to other things. A lot of people are allergic to seafood, and with some things the reactions get worse each time and can be serious. I'm allergic to penicillin and I've been stung by bees a few times, and a few years ago I was walking my dog and got stung again. I felt normal until about 15 minutes later when I started breaking out in hives all over my face, neck and chest. I didn't even know about it (didn't itch or anything, felt totally normal) until my sister saw me and started freaking out.

I took some Benadryl and my dad drove me to the hospital (I fell asleep in the car because of the Benadryl, it makes you exhausted) and by the time we got there the hives were gone, but I had to get a shot in the ass (which sucked especially because the nurse didn't tell me what she was doing, she just told me to pull my pants down and jammed the needle into my ass) :( I went to see a doctor a couple days later and he told me I might be allergic to bees and not know it, gave me a prescription for an Epipen that I'm supposed to have near me all the time just in case. I also have some Benadryl that I leave in my glovebox in my car just in case.

Maybe I should see a doc about this.

I know last summer I had taken a couple Advils you know the pain killer and had been taking them for a while with no problems then this one night I took two for a few aches and pains and went to bed. It was about 45 minutes later I went into what I called convusions of constant sneezing I couldn't stop and sneezed at least 40 something times in a row.

I sat up on the end of the bed and felt as if my face was on fire and went to the bathroom to look in the mirror and my face and nose and sinus's were two times bigger and my face was red as a beet and my eyes blood shot red I looked weird with my silver hair and red swollen face lol!

To make matters worst my windpipe started closing and I started to panic thinking what the hell is going on and when I checked my arms and chest I was broke out in hives then it dawn on me it had to be the Advils and on pain killers you have the warnings on the bottle and it fit me to a T to what was going on and I haven't taken them since but thankfully my windpipe didn't close up all the way and it finally subsided.

I was scared sh*tless simply because I had no control over what was going on and never had this happen before except for the minor shrimp moments and hope the hell it don't happen again with some surprise food or something I eat or take for the first time.

Guess I'll look into seeing a doc on this matter and see whats up before I try the shrimp again.

Thanks for the replies and you who have had scary moments like myself know its no dam fun.

It's a food allergy. You could make a test: eating other brands for example, but if it continues you'll have to live without the shrimps i guess.

I am sure that is it. I might still try the Wal-mart shrimp where it's not cooked and try it that way and see what happens.

Thanks

So true but there are also stuff they use in the batter like spices or other additives at these places like Long John Silver to give it kick that makes me think just maybe it could be the addictives reckon? ;) And if I buy some Wal-mart shrimp uncooked and take a bite of a couple and see what happens then I'll know it's not the shrimp but the batter and stuff they used then I can go from there and just cook my own with my own batter.

what penkitten says is right. Food allergy to seafood is common.

Feel free to test & report back ;)

but it still won't tell you what you're actually allergic to. see a doc and get an epi or injectable benadryl. say for example it's actually an allergy to MSG (common ingredient in fast food & Chinese takeout) rather than seafood. one trip to the wrong Chinese restaurant and you'll risk another throat closure. i'd think the sheer panic of such a situation would get you to shell out your co-pay for a preventive office visit real quick but maybe i'm wrong.

I really appreciate the concerns I am among bright and caring people.

I can eat salmon, sardines, anchovies, tuna with no problems just that little shrimp.

Guess for now I'll stay away from the shrimp and I rarely eat out at chinese places or fast food actually never in the past two years since the shrimp issue so I am good there but I am coming up again to see the doctor for a routine checkup and I'll mention this to the doctor and see whats up.

Thanks again for your concerns

i am wondering if you are allergic to just shrimp or if its any fresh seafood.
i think you should go get an allergy test if you plan to eat any other kinds of seafood, or steer completely clear of it.

Maybe you are allergic to "shell fish", seafood that has an exterior shell like shrimp, crab legs, muscles, etc... the other seafood you mentioned have internal bones. It could be the iodine (pink tinting) in the shrimp. Pork can also contain iodine.

I think it is an allergy too, but a Dr. will tell you for sure with some testing.

Know this tho, and really keep this in mind. An allergic reaction isn't always the same, yours was mild but that doesn't mean the next time it will be. This time it was your lip, next time it could be your throat including your wind pipe. O_O

Get it checked out for sure before you order that next ****tail, just to be safe.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

This is what is strange.

Keep in mind it's been several years since I eat the LongJohns Silver shrimp but during the two times I did my upper lip swelled like a bee sting or punch and nothing more happened but since it was so annoying I never tried it again.

With the Advil now that was a complete surprise to me totally freaked me out and that's where my wind pipe was closing up I talked like the God Father but the swelling finally subsided and I was OK but I had used Advils before without problems but the warning on the label fit me completely in what happen but I was close to calling 911.

I can eat salmon like on a sandwich even had a sandwich last week and have on several accasions without incident so I'd say I am safe there plus the same with the sardines but iodine could be the problem with the shrimp but for the sake of safety I'll stay away from all seafood for now and concentrate on red meat.

But definitely on my next doctors appointment I will ask about the test and find out whats up.

Again, I appreciate your concerns it makes me feel good knowing you kind ladies and gentlemen can be so caring ;)
