If you don't want to risk looking like a cheapo then just show up to the date 10 minutes late, tell her you got caught in traffic. She'll naturally get her coffee and go take a seat. You then get yourself a coffee sit down with her and chat then if things are still going well you can exit the coffee shop and begin the second part of the date at which time you can buy her an ice cream or whatever from mcdonalds.

If you are going to buy her coffee DON'T STAY IN THE DAMN COFFEE PLACE!

Buy her damn coffee (and get one for yourself also so it doesn't seem akward) and head out to do something fun right away. Go bowling, go play pool or whatever.

Just make sure this isn't a coffee date. Don't stay there chatting like a nice little puppy holding a coffee in your hand in the coffee place. Go show this girl a good time somewhere where you can incorporate some kino.

Having a cup of coffee and a nice, comfortable chat in a coffee place is what she does with her girlfriends. You need to show her a good time and have a good time yourself as well.
