I think you had the right idea but didn't say it the right way.

For example you could have it it like this: "Yeah I've been close with a few girls, but not to the point where I really considered it serious enough. Some people might have said we were bf & gf, but I just didn't really feel it."

That pretty much ends that question dead in its tracks and leaves her wondering more about you. It makes you seem a little mysterious and does not give away too much information.

I dont think you should go in depth about anything of your past life, specifically if you have to use so much words just to give her an unclear answer. She didnt ask for a book thick repsonse.

next time she asks just respond: "The number of stars in the sky."

Tons of guys out there exaggerate and lie about many things, jokingly or not. But in the end its how the woman interprets it.

example: today i went out to lunch and came back. then the recpetionist goes "screwit you went out? i didnt see you leave"
me: yea
her: where did you go?
me: walking around the park (actually i was just at lunch)
her: shame on you, dumping one girl and picking up another. (she thinks im a player for some reason)
me: of course....! you know me all too well.
her: *giggling*

It's all about conversation play. Nobody likes a boring conversationist.....add some life to your responses, twist it a little. There's no law saying you have to be honest.
