the all idea of explaining alphas and betas through natural selection can only be a joke, specially comming from a person with no expertise like Daniel.
First the concept of alpha and beta is relative, if you hang out with geeks you can be the alpha of the group, if you hang out with the football team you may be beta in that situation. So you could spread your genes in one group and not in the other.
Also you could say that since humans are a social specie, we need to make teams, and alphas need betas to defend their tribes. Alphas are also more violent and tend to have more conflits, and they can die earlier because of that. It´s better for you to be in the middle term between alpha and beta.
The all evolution stuff is much more complicated than that...of course. Not to that if it were true that betas were all beaten up, that would have happened since amebas...
