You know the feeling you have on the first day of the new semester, when you walk into class, pick a seat by yourself, and sit there and wish someone would come and talk to you? You know how self-conscious you feel, because it seems like everyone knows everyone, but nobody's talking to you, and you'd love for ANYONE to come up and introduce themselves?
EVERYONE (and "everyone" includes the girls, possibly moreso than anyone else) feels like this everywhere they go. Once you realize that everyone just wants someone to come and say hi to them, introducing yourself is so much easier.
You're not sitting there feeling self-conscious because you're a loser, you're sitting there because you're HUMAN. The HB9 over there in the corner wants someone to come say hi, MAYBE EVEN MORE THAN YOU DO. "I'm hot", she thinks to herself "so why isn't anyone coming to talk to me? Maybe I'm not that hot. I bet all the guys are interested in THAT girl over there...her butt's disgusting, and she's so fat. I wish someone would just come and talk to me."
Realize that everyone is just as nervous as you are, and you'll be fine.
