I'm thinking about getting the nike free 5.0 running shoe. Supposedly, it's supposed to make you foot muscles stronger so you can become faster or some crazy schnaz like that. I'm not sure if they are worth it compared to any other running shoe that would cost me a lot less $$$.

i have been running for years, sprint, distance, interval, you name it. I personally like new balance the best. Those are made for runners. They are runners sneakers. I always ask them to give me the one w/ most cushion cause somtimes i have shin problems. Nikes are sometimes too commercialized and don't really make good running shoes. Thats how it is for me, ma be differnt for you.

I have two pairs of Nike Free 5.0s. One pair I run in even though they are the cross training version and another pair of cross trainers I got to replace the older pair when they wore out but I still use the older pair for running and lifting. I've logged hundreds of miles of running on them and they are still in great shape.

I'll admit Nike really does like to make up bullsh!t to sell their shoes but the 5.0's are definetly worth every penny. That and I like how the sole is flexible. It's like wearing a sock with a sole on the bottom.

I highly recommend them.

I run barefoot. No need to spend money on fancy shoes for running.

I second the New Balance recommendation. The higher the model number of NB shoe, the stiffer and more supportive it is.

New Balance all the way.

I was running this summer in a pair of Nike cross trainers and started getting shin splints so bad I couldn't run anymore. I switched to a pair of new balance running shoes and they were 100x better. Shin splints went away (haven't had them since) and the shoes are awesome.

Take your old shoes in when you buy new running shoes and the person should be able to tell you what type of shoe you need based on the wear of the tread on your old shoe. Go to a runningroom if you have one near you. A little more expensive but better in the long run.

The best thing to do would be to go to a sports store with people that actually know something about running shoes and try out the different shoes. I know if you buy a pair of Brooks and you don't like the way they feel after a week or so, you can return them.

I like Sauconys, but I don't need as much cushion as some. I agree with jookins though, running barefoot is awesome, but it only works if you're on grass or some other soft surface, roads and sidewalks aren't very forgiving on your feet.

If you're serious about running, 4-5 miles 4 times a week, you'll want something with more cushion than the frees.

It's a tad different, but I've found that Merrell makes some great trail running shoes...

No they are way overpriced.
If you want to build a stronger foot, implement running barefoot into your running, outside in the grass if you can.
