I’ve noted as I get older, my perception of risk has changed a lot.

when I was younger, I drunk/drug drived, I banged hats off. I always had this general feeling it would be alright.

Now, I am always scanning risks. I won’t touch a car if any alcohol in system. I worry a lot.

My test is good at 690.

I had a very bad few years in 30s where everything went wrong. I wonder - is my increased fear and worry a result of this (kinda like PTSD) or, is this simply getting older.

Also, I’ve also thought now I have things to lose. Family and career. At 20 I could always start afresh.

However I have friends the same age who still have this “it will be fine” attitude. I recently learned my friend who’s a taxi driver was an alcoholic for 15 years. I would be in a constant state of panic if I was doing that!

Anyone else notice their risk appetite decreasing as they age?

Thats why "the west" is going down the drains. More and more people living in complete ignorance, unwilling to think further then from fridge to couch.

With life experience comes caution, which is totaly normal..... like doing stupid **** when you are young.

I have brain trauma so sadly my risk tolerance is only decreasing with age, I still play the stock market sometimes but I've only taken to buying silver now because I like not losing all my money

I think you hit it on the head when you said you had some very bad/traumatic experiences that made you soft

Edit: Edited so it doesn't come off as an insult.

Not really I'm 31 and I quit my 9-5 in February to go it alone

I do loads of risky sh1t that I probably wouldn't have done in my 20's because I was stuck In the system

I think the system of 9-5 , family and suburban lifestyle tends to breed fear into people

Most people you speak to within this demographic are absolutely petrified of their mortgages or losing their job or some other silly crap specifically designed to control the masses into doing as they are told

The comfort and routine reduces your appetite for change and with no change there is no risk

The real danger in life is complacency I know several people that have literally wasted their entire lives in 1 small town doing some stupid admin job one guy in his 60's actually told me he had wasted his life

and after that I quit

Thing is if you look back on your life and all you have to show for it is some kids ( who will leave you one day anyway ) and a retirement plan you kind of have wasted your life

Growing up means that you have so much responsibilities that you have to be more cautious which risk is worth it and which isn't. As a kid the jurisdiction system is softer on you and your parents are responsable for your life and might bail you out.

Right now I'm injured because I tried to do a jump and have to be at home for months and can't work. I can't recommend being foolish/daring.

That's comical considering the whole schpeel about risk aversion and being too scared to drive after having a beer. While what I said comes off as a joke, I was being serious. You mentioned having trauma and saying now you're way too worried about stuff and have higher risk aversion. Pay attention to your own topic and leave the emotions in the back seat.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

Nothing about that was funny. See real tough guys don't joke about physical violence.. I mean try saying something like that to someone in Brooklyn or Chicago (2 places that made me who I am today) and you'll quickly realize how not funny it is.

But, it's okay. I understand. You mentioned alot of sh.t happened to you in your thirties, and that you have some PTSD -- so I understand it might have something to do with you getting all defensive over a statement that I made in seriousness, more than it just 'sounding' funny.

Reason being, I've dealt with alot of trauma myself but I powered through it. Ofc, my trauma came as a result of being involved in the drug game and street life for a good chunk of my life. Your situation may be different but trauma definitely has a huge affect on how we operate. It's actually what got me more into psychology, besides meeting and trying to understand alot of people with unique circumstances better.

Did I see you on the TV show cops? If so, thank you for all the entertainment. I'm pretty soft myself so I could not do all those things those people on cops do.

Nah. Most of the stuff you see on cops is in remote locations and alot of it filmed during the 90s. You don't really see episodes featuring
big cities as far as I know.

Besides that, I understand alot of people got a weird attitude towards people who either grew up in the hood or dealt drugs, were involved in gangs, etc -- but I get it. Some people could never imagine themselves in that picture -- and others kinda wish they had some of that in their background because it builds character. Someone reacted to my post with the laughing emoji as an example.. It is what it is.. Not a very alpha male trait to laugh at someone's past but then again, most people who do take risks that can come with dangerous consequences are usually staunch alpha males, and beta males cant relate to it so it is what it is.

Hey, not to veer off topic too much, but if you don’t me asking, which town in Brooklyn? I worked in Bushwick (definitely not a place to talk smack) for years and used to hang out in Greenpoint.

I spent most of my time between Flatbush and Canarsie /Crown Heights primarily in the 90s to 2002-2003 when I moved to Chicago. Even though I moved, I would visit once or twice a year and spend a good amount of time with old friends and new ones. I'm still in tune with NYC culture to this day, mostly because of hiphop and music cultures and just having friends out there.

I also spent time in in Greenpoint, Bushwick, Corona, Queens, Astoria, Jamaica Queens. Never really Harlem, not too much of the Bronx, etc. Hard not to be all over the place in NYC though.

My childhood friend went to jail for shooting at the cops. My parents knew his parents. It is a tight knit community of refugees. Some people can't handle being poor and they run with people that get them into trouble. A lot of them have mellowed out though. Prison has s tendency to do that to some people. I didn't see the glamor in it. They did get a lot of women. Mostly lower quality imho. Too each his own.

Yeah that sucks man I know a couple stories like that.. Of people shooting at or attacking cops or cops shooting at them/being shot by a cop/killed by cops. I just don't mention them often or try to glamourize much of the street sht i've seen or done.. I've had younger kids/neighbors in Chicago who looked up to me who would get caught with a gun or selling drugs and then when their parents confronted them they would tell them they wanted to be like me. Its kinda sad but It didn't really hit me till i was about 23-24 when I finally started getting away from it all. Sadly I don't have contact with some of those kids anymore but I was def like an older brother to some of them. I was about 4 years older then the one I used to hang with he most often because he lived in the apartment right below us.

At 35, I've become a lot more risk averse. I tend to calculate every possible outcome of a situation and decide what my exit plan is. Essentially it's almost a tenant of stoicism, I imagine the worst possible scenario and visualize experiencing that, and let that guide my actions to avoid that situation.

It's not due to fear, but due to experience teaching me how wrong things can quickly get if one doesn't plan/anticipate it. I did some dumb, dumb **** when I was younger and these days I wouldn't repeat those things.

Channel your excited feelings into positive thoughts and behaviors. You will attract women by being enthusiastic, radiating energy, and becoming someone who is fun to be around.
