Anyone have any luck on Rippetoe's program? I took two months off from working out while I moved and I NEED to get back to it. I've heard a lot of good things about this program. Everyone I've talked to suggests it.

My main concern is the squat three times a week. Not sure how to do that. I squatted on Tuesday and my hams were fried. Feel fine today and I'm going later today. Think I just need time to adjust to the routine?

The basic thing I read on the Rippetoe program said you can substitute power cleans for pendlay rows. Any advantages or disadvantages? I'm ordering the book today.

I'm getting ready to start on the program myself. After flailing away at the gym with no real plan and limited results for a few months now, I've been researching the Starting Strength program a lot and it seems to have great results for a lot of people, and it highly recommended.

I start the program tomorrow, but did some squats (my first ever) last week just as a trial run and was very, very sore for a number of days, but feeling better now and I think it will just take some time for my legs to get used to that kind of stress. I'm going to keep the weight light on the squats for a few weeks until I get the hang of it, really focus on getting form and technique down and then ramp up the weight from there.

Just be sure to incoporate some kind of weightlifting diet into your life as well... I'm doing the anabolic diet, but I think the most important thing is that you find a program and stick with it. Your body will need the right kinds of nutrients if you want to achieve any real growth.

Good luck!

The only thing I've really read about using power cleans instead of rows is that you may want to do some auxiliarry sets of dips. Personally I'm going with rows but it seems like either will accomplish the goal.

Is there a free version of Rippetoe's program online somewhere, or do you have to go out and pay for it?

Here's a beginner strength training program based on Rippetoe's.

About the Squat 3x times a week. You get used to it. The trick is to start with a light weight, progressivily adding weight every workout. That's how you get used to it. Great for strength & endurance.

I Front Squatted 4 times this week for your info.

Power clean:
-it's a power exercise
-teaches you to explode, to accelerate
-problem: technique takes long to master, I'm still learning every day

Pendlay Rows
-technique is easier to learn
-explosive, but never as explosive as a powerclean
-great for back development
-add weight on your pendlay row, you'll see your other lifts increase

Here's a short review of starting strength
