Thought about it but I'm 45 and thought claiming ADHD is for teens and young adults. What are the right things to say to get a doctor to write an Rx?
The most important thing is you show up dressed well and talk well. I got it on my first visit, and I didn't even ask for it. All I did was tell the doctor I was tested positive for ADD when I was a kid, but my parents were too strict to allow me to take medications. I then explained how I was a failure in school my entire life, until I turned 18 and went to the doctor on my own. If you have a degree, don't tell them.
I explained that when I went on my own to the Doc, I was prescribed adderall my senior year in high school and I did very well and graduated. I then went off the meds due to cost and insurance issues, but now I am struggling again at work and with family life. I told him I have anxiety ALL the time and can never relax. The doc understood and described this as "baseline anxiety". Just tell them you have been dealing with it without meds most of your life, but now it's causing you great stress in life.
Doc told me he is going to give me Wellbutrin ONLY and see how that does. I was pretty disappointed, but I did NOT get angry, I did not argue, I did not ask for adderall. I just agreed with him and said "whatever you think is best doctor".
Then he asked me if I was in a lot of car accidents? I said "not recently". He said "if you have ADD you would have alot of car accidents".
Then I told a story about how I almost died years ago when I had a bad car wreck when I wasn't paying attention to the road.
I believe that was the tipping point. I was then handed 2 scripts, one was for the adderall.
I pulled it off like a BOSS. I really do have ADD though, and my stories were true. You can still pull it off though.
Another thing, if they give you a different medication the first visit, DON'T WORRY, take it if you want, or not. Then the next visit tell them "it's not working", then they give you what you want.
