Radical Proposal to end the "Looks Debate"

I doubt the solution I'm about to propose will see the light of the day, but I'll throw it out there regardless.

Here is what is going on: a debate that has been raging on for approximately 7 years (see Looks thread in archives) has consisted of two simple arguments: 1. Looks matter to get chicks... 2. No they don't.

Both sides have presented a relatively minor amount of evidence to support their respective side in comparison to the utter barrage of vitriol for their opposition. This would be obnoxious enough if it wasn't for the lack of variety in the people who are arguing, as you can clearly see that several of the key figures in the main "Looks" thread in the archives are still arguing (now under different monikers as a result of being banned...several times).

This clearly will not end. Thread after thread will be hijacked by members of this nauseatingly stale war. - So here is my solution: the mods/sosuave must endorse a side and stick with it. Either Sosuave.net becomes a "Looks matter" discussion forum where anyone with a dissenting opinion is warned and then banned if they hijack a thread and argue otherwise, or Sosuave.net becomes a "Looks don't matter" discussion forum where anyone with a dissenting opinion is warned and then banned if they hijack a thread and argue otherwise.

Only a drastic, perhaps fascist oversight will put an end to this. Apparently banning "looks" threads wasn't good enough (as that only lasted a year or so), therefore moving to a much more stern stance is necessary.

Allowing this sort of "discussion" to crowd the forums and hijack threads is puzzling at best, and a suggestion at driving up page hits for Google ad sense at worst.

I am not an expert, but from how I understand it how a man looks in terms of gaining more body weight and muscle mass absolutely improves his chances of getting laid. At the same time, we all also know that it is not the only factor, looks is just a factor. The question is how much do looks matter.

Then there is the issue of confidence, which there is no disagreement that a man should have confidence. The question here is, does confidence have to reflect actual objective value (i.e. good looks)?

Things aren't always in black and white eve though you may seem them that way. This is a discussion forum, and forcing people to discuss only the topics you approve of (how fascist of you), lowers the overall quality of discussion and information.

This is an internet forum that makes money through ad revenue. One thing that makes more money from ad revenue is endless debate on impossible to settle issues like "are looks important?"

As such, those types of debates will always be welcome in a place like this.

as far as scientific "proof," the following comes to mind:

John Mallow, who used to run some kind of image consulting company, wrote a couple of books. One called Dress for Success, and the other called Live for Success.

These books were filled with data that was the result of extensive social field testing. No theory, only pure, unadulterated results. And by extensive, I mean thoroughly extensive. Groups of guys sent out into the field, and groups of guys to follow and observe. Usually with only one or two changes between the groups, to identify the variables.

Those two books, despite being nearly thirty years old, can be much more help that a useless internet debate if you are interested in improving your image.

Evolutionary biologists discovered the answer decades ago. Confidence mattering exponentially more than looks is as definitive as saying the sky is blue or grass is green. It's just how it is.

Ordinarily, I would agree with you. Opinions are opinions and if they don't harm anyone else then I see no reason to stifle anyone's view on a subject. This is a unique case though since guys like Rescue Mission/skip2mylou DO harm others. See, the problem with feverishly trying to convince people that looks matter is that even if these individuals were right, then the only result would be that guys would start believing that they can't get certain chicks because they're not good-looking enough.

This kind of negative self-talk doesn't do anybody any good and has no place on this forum. Rescue Mission's idea of a rescue mission is to assert that you need to be good-looking to get girls, and to attempt to "shut up" anyone who is unsuccessful with women with playground insults such as "pvssy", "moron", and other childish name-calling. This kind of vitriol goes against everything SoSuave stands for and should not be allowed to stand. People come to SoSuave because it is based on a support system from others, in the form of Boot Camp journals, approach journals, and guys helping others through sticking points and their different situations. We're are all different levels and to attempt to silence or belittle those who are still AFC's by mocking them is the antithesis of this site's main objective.

The bottom line is that no good can come from believing that the things you cannot change will hurt your chances with women. Attempting to destroy the confidence of others like Rescue Mission, Falcon25 and a few others by convincing them that they won't get girls unless they become rich or famous shows extremely low moral character and they should not be allowed a soapbox which they use to preach this garbage. Anyway, that's my opinion on why looks threads should have been banned long ago.

If getting called "pwssy" on an internet forum destroys your confidence, then you are by all means a pwssy.

I think the whole looks debate is just a damn waste of time. Why the fwck would anyone worry so much about something they can't really control? For guys, it's pretty simple what we have to do. Stay in good shape, practice good hygiene, and dress well. No amount of convincing one way or the other of how much looks matter is gonna change the fact that I will try my best to do all three of those things, as well as work on my game. Those are the things I can control.
