It's already been dicussed on here that TV advertising mostly caters to women and this catering results in the portrayal of males in TV commercials(usually White-because they're a safe target) as being inept clowns who need a female to rescue them from their stupidity.
In regards to race however, a very recent trend I have noticed is the heavy use of Black actors in commercials which portray the traditional family unit ( I don't really like the term African American because some dude might actually be from Jamaica or Canada ). Now I'm not protesting the use of these actors in these commercials. I'm simply confused: Advertising is all about money; Commercials always aim at the demographic they are trying to target. While I'm not trying to insult anyone, I think it's pretty common knowledge that at least 70 % of Black children born in this country (U.S.) are born to single mothers. Now with this statistic, it's a safe guess that's there's not going to be a lot of Black kids being raised in a traditional nucleor family.
So why are there so many commercials aiming at a demographic that is not high in numbers ? Are advertisers simply trying to be "good guys" and give a pleasant image to a group of people whom they feel have not had enough representaion in mainstream media ? Is there an advertising conspiracy to break down the traditional family unit for Whites ? Why are there not a lot of Asians or Hispanics being depicted since their numbers are much higher than Blacks in most parts of the US ?
Again, I'm not hating on anyone. I'm questioning the thinking for this casting since advertisng is based on getting money from your target demographic ( and for what it's worth, until divorce laws change, I don't think ANY young man should get married and have children in this country).
Now I'm not making a statement relating to everyday events. Only advertising. I haven't actually counted, but I would guess that at least 60 % of the commercials saw yesterday had this racial portrayal. I would like to point out that we don't really have a huge Black population in the U.S., but we do have a man who is half Black as our President.
