i'm usually the guy who goes to these things and seeks out a few people i already know and then cling to them for the rest of the night

but no more! i dont know anyone at this party

so how do i approach this? i just want practice at socialising, and a few numbers here and there is bonus. so do i just walk up to people who will no doubt be broken up into groups, interupt the conversation (?) and introduce myself? do i try hijacking the conversation?

or maybe i should try to join in the conversation, then when there's a lull introduce myself??

i've got no idea!!

I feel the same way. The only thing I can come up with is get drunk like rocksoff said. I went into this party last Friday only knowing one person there, I got drunk then had a hell of a time.

Just be social. If your friends know people in another group of friends have them intermingle with the other group. If not just join their conversation if you have some input.

People are at a party to socialize with people they don't know. What's so hard about going up to someone and saying "Hi I'm _____." ??
