I do'nt know man. I think pushups definitely can get you ripped. I'm not too bad. And all I do is pushups/pullups and ride a bike during the warmer days.Originally posted by chill
pushups arent going to get you ripped, but are an important part of any weight training regiment
P.S. I can do about 35 in a row twice with a 2 min. break
In any Intro Kinetics class in college, they say not to bend the elbow past 90 degrees. that what they told me anyways. it was something about stretching the muscled while the elbows are too far back can cause injury or soemthing like that.Originally posted by No_Sleep
Yes, make sure you go further than 90 degrees also if you move your hands closer together they get harder
Yeah sorry I made a mistake. Don't think I was paying attention when I said that.Originally posted by sfalexi
The wierd thing about pushups is that you can build up to a big number quickly, and if you stop, you can shrink back down quickly.
But I say do 'em. I think it's a good idea.

Maybe. Maybe it's the cardio and that I remain active. At the very least, doing pushups can't HURT your definition.Originally posted by Anhslaught
Anyhow, doing a lot of pushups doesn't necessarily make you cut. Doing that would be considered spot reducing and spot reducing is a myth. You'll build some strength and endurance, but if you got fat arms, doing push ups won't help. It's all about your diet and hypertrophing your muscles to show which causes you to look more lean and cut.
Reminds me of when I was getting my ass beat over at my old college. A couple upperclassmen told us that they could 'break' us (term we used for when someone drops cause they're too weak to continue) in 10 pushups. We took the challenge. It took us about 10 minutes to do ten pushups. VERY slowly down, stop and hold while halfway down, get to the bottom, stop and hold JUST above the ground, slowly up, etc. etc.Originally posted by Keeper
A good tip on doing pushups:
Take your time. If you can do 100 a minute... slow down a little. Move as SLOWLY as you CAN. You'll see that those 100 pushups will be a million times more torturous.
And this also builds muscle much better.
Read that in a US Navy SEAL training handbook.
My squadron NCO was HUGE. And he used to elevate his feet on his office desk to do them. It definitely works.Originally posted by Sh0t
If you want to get bigger doing pushups, change the leverage to make the execise harder, throw plates on your back, and do one handers(until they become easy).
If you can't get a gym or use weights, working up to one handers is about the best thing you can do.
Elevate your feet. My fav is to rest my feet on a swiss ball.
