pull up / chin ups, how effective

Are they good exercises to included ,what body parts do they workout ,and is it considered a compound move?

They are extremely effective. They hit the arms and back pretty well, especially once you start adding weight. And it's nice to know that if you're ever hanging off the side of a building, you'll be able to pull yourself to safety :p

pullups and deadlifts are the best back movements available.

weighted pullups FTW!

ive been wondering a lil bit about pullups too...wuts the differences between overhand and underhand? and wide grip and close grip?

wide grip = wide
close grip = thick

overhand = guy way
underhand = girlie way

wide grip overhand grip has almost doubled my width! i could barely do them at all when I started, now I rep with 70lbs hanging

how tall are ya'll?
i'm 6"3' and the pull up bar is too short at my gym
how do ya'll tall guys do it?
also, how do ya'll avoid swinging alittle while hanging?

Just grab the bar and then bend your knees so your feet are off the floor.

swinging is easy to do but just focus better and dont move your legs alot.

they are the most effective back workout with the bent over row and dead lift! I do them every morning when I wake up with push ups and parallel dips they are good for overall strength.

I'm your height. just bend the knees.
Don't swing or kip. Go up slowly in a nice controlled manner. Then all the way down until the elbows almost lock or fully lock (I always lock my elbows).

Don't be one of those "half-rep" guys who think they're bad a$$es because they crank out a bunch really fast but only go half-way down.

I am your height and like Teflon_Mcgee said bent your knees and do a full motion, try to feel your back muscles doing the job not your arms.

Correct! Full extention of the arm! Otherwise you won't be workin the full muscle. Try and lift urself up so the bar touchs ur chest everytime you reach the peak of a rep. Pinches up them muscles a lil more. :rockon:

Why do you consider it the girly way? At my gym I haven't seen one woman do a pullup and most of the guys either use underhand or a variation of overhand and underhand.
