One more tip about exercise:
A few of my friends have tried p90x, swearing up and down that they will stick with a routine. All three lost interest within two weeks.
The secret to fitness is finding an exercise that you truly enjoy doing. What got me back into shape was cycling. I went from casual riding from my house around the local park system, to time trials, racing and 100 mile bike rallies. That was in 2004 and I still enjoy it more than ever. A few years ago I started running, merely to try and alleviate the fitness plateau I was facing from cycling. Now I'm training for multiple marathons this summer.
The point is, I wouldn't have stuck with running and cycling all these years if I didn't truly enjoy them. For you, it might be roller blading, cross country skiing, yoga, whatever. Figure out what your passion is with exercising, don't just dive into some fitness program only to be let down.
Exercise alone won't cut it. Diet is equally important. I didn't simply give up all the foods I love, but moderation was essential. Do I still splurge once a week with pizza and ice cream when a new episode of Top Gear comes out? You bet your azz I do. There are LOTS of good foods out there that taste wonderful but don't make you fat. Experiment around and find what you like. If you want results, that's what you'll have to do. I eat around 2000-2200 calories a day to maintain 150lbs, and you'd be surprised at how little food that is.
Wish I had time to write more, but this is the abbreviated story of how I got fit and what it takes. It's not as daunting as it sounds, it's a life style change completely, but once the old habits are broken, you don't look back,
