Anyone here have photography as a hobby?

I've always been interested in it but I've never had to money to buy a decent camera and start. Somewhat lame excuse but call me lazy, haha.

Anyway, how much can i get a decent camera for? Also what additional parts do i need to buy? Does anyone have like a set of guidelines i should look out for when purchasing a camera?

You can get a great entry level DSLR for well under a grand. I'd stick with Nikon or Canon. Buy a book on photographic techniques and learn about how to use ISO, f-stops and shutter speeds. That sort of thing. Get an assortment of lens filters to do interesting things(you'll need a UV filter at least to protect your lens. Get a tripod. Learn how to use Photoshop or Lightroom to fix your pics or do other interesting things like High Dynamic Range photography.

You don't have to spend a lot of money on a camera to get into photography. I have a Minolta XG-1 that I got from Goodwill for literally $5 (plus tax) that was in pretty much new condition and works great. It just needed some batteries and film and it was good to go. It's my favorite camera that I've had, and while I'd like to have a nice digital camera, I'm very satisfied with this.

I would highly suggest that you check out your local second hand store or check around for a good cheap camera, because it is much easier for you to drop it as a hobby if you are not interested than if you already sank hundreds (or thousands) of dollars into it. And remember that price does not make the camera, and that many cameras and photography equipment is ridiculously overpriced because they know people will be dumb enough to pay that much for it.
