What would you guys do when pets are involved?

The ex finished everything 5 weeks ago and I moved out 4 weeks ago. We've had minimal contact but because I'm at my parents I haven't been able to take one of my cats. We actually have 3 and they are currently living with her.

Should I keep in contact with her for the sake of cat visiting rights, or should I try and let them go? I plan (once I get my own place) to take one of them, but I don't know if that's wise.

I'm going to find it hard to be cool and civil around her after the way our relationship ended so suddenly after 13 years together.

Pets can be one of the hardest things about breaking up IMO.
Does she know you want the cat back? It's always a good idea to be cool and civil to your ex in any case, even though some women make this difficult.
There's no reason to be immature. Don't let her bait you into getting angry.
Other things I would consider:

Do you trust her to take care of the cats? Would the cat miss the other cats? Sometimes cats get attached to where they live (their "territory"), although I've moved cats and they didn't seem to mind. If you have one cat, would you want another to keep it company while you're at work? Would the cat be better off with you or her?

Sir Psycho Sexy, apparently you've never owned a pet.

Pets are never part of an old life they should remain to the owner that loves them most and has shown the most care in their health unless the owners own health issues make him give them up.

If Bo my 17 year old cat who taught himself to use the toilet were to be given up to a mate I wouldn't be a happy camper to say the least. I would go to court and properly go to jail if the judge ordered him to a mate in a settlement I kid you not.

Pets become a part of you and Bo is like a son and just today he communicated to me to open a closed bedroom door that was closed. He walked up to me at my computer meowed until I got up and followed him. He then lead me to the door where he then sat down a bit then looked up to me and when I opened the door he headed straight to his favorite chair and layed down.

You can't replace that plus knowing he takes a p*ss in the toilet and never misses like me is unbelievable and cool.... only thing though.... I have to make sure the lid is down

Well when we got (Leon) the cat I wish to take, she got him for me. He was 7 weeks old when we got him and he's just 18 months old now. So he's young enough to adjust to new surroundings I think. The other 2 cats are a lot older and have issues as they are both rescue cats. So I can't really take them away from their familiar surroundings.

She knows I wish to take him eventually but I'm not having an easy time finding a new place to live so it may take some time. I'm just worried that as time goes by she's either going to stop me having contact with them, or not allow me to take Leon. You know how women like changing their minds.

I did consider that if I'm honest, but why should she get all of the cats? I've already lost my home and the car, I'm f**ked if she's getting everything.

My cats were in my divorce papers was no way she was taking them from me i love those cats more than i ever loved the ex!! Animals give unconditional love unlike romantic love ! Find someone u trust to keep ur cat dude!!

I have arranged to go up and see them on Sunday. I can't wait to see them, not too happy about having to see her though. I shall be mr cool for the sake of my cats. If she has any decency she will f**k off upstairs or something out of my way. The past 5 weeks though has taught me that decency isn't one of her strong points, so this could go any way.
