Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a nice notebook/Laptop before things start getting busy with uni.

Anyway, I've been out of the whole tech loop for awhile and I'm not sure what would be a nice notebook?

I've got around 2 grand i can spend, maybe a little more if it's a really nice notebook that will definitely last me awhile. (how long do they last people on average?)

I'm mainly looking to use it for office related things. (Word, Excel etc)
and gaming. (Call of duty, Diablo 3, starcraft 2, etc)

so a decent processor will probably be required along with graphics card.

So If you guys know some good makes and models, or what i should be looking out for, it'd be a great help.

Here is a spectrum:

Battery Life <----------------------> Power

Pick a spot and you will find a notebook. You cannot buy a notebook for $2K to play Starcracft 2 on. Its not on the spectrum.

I would start looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad series or the Toshiba Satellite Pros. They're laptops, not gaming machines.

It wasn't THAT long ago that I bought one for my wife's business. My research ended up with me getting a Dell XPS with most of the upgrades, (like the better LCD). It's one sweet laptop.

Since you mentioned gaming, all the more reason to go XPS. Definitely make sure and get the best video card you can buy because the very best laptop video card is only a mediocre video card compared to a desktop.

If you buy a laptop with capabilities for modern gaming you WILL sacrifice quite a bit of battery life along with it. Since youll be using it in uni, thats not a good idea(in my experience) unless your schools lecture halls have easy access to power.

In any case, be sure not to get one with nvidia 8400 or 8600 series graphics cards, they have faulty chips which will cause it to have much shorter life expectancy.

If you want to do gaming you shouldn't buy a laptop. For $2k you should be able to buy a decent laptop for school AND a desktop to game on.

Going on what with azanon said a good laptop gfx card is only mediocre compared to a desktop. Also you can't upgrade laptops besides the memory and HDD. A desktop will last you much longer.

bs man! i doubt sc2 will have graphics demands that are that hardcore.

little clarification, i have a desktop that's alright and my uni halls do have easy access to power supplies. However, most of the time i'll be plugged into the power supply in the uni library where i'll do my research and type in essay's etc.

Also, i know notebooks will never be as good as a desktop but I've seen a lot of nice ones that pulled their weight pretty well. Personally i wanted an ASUS but i'll look into the suggested.

Keep them coming guys, appreciate it
