it's an odd adage in horse racing... you can always make up for not training hard enough in workouts by jogging and other things throughout the week, but if you work a horse too hard in a workout, there is nothing whatsoever you can do to take it back

meaning, if you mess up, it's rather you go too slow than too fast.
