I move a lot and let me tell you it has helped me gained the confidence of meeting new people, getting numbers, hooking up and building your status.
Last year I moved to a new city, it's a bachelor city where everyone is in their mid twenties and single. I didn't know anyone so I would just go to public areas and just start making conversation. Here's some tips from my experience.
1.) Make friends in line: Chat with those around you, ask some questions and don't be afraid to say you just moved to the city. Get some numbers both guys and girls.
2.) Sit at the bar: There are stools there for a reason, for individuals. Make friends with the bartender, trust me. Chat with those around you cause I bet you any money that there are those who are either shy or in the same position as you.
3.) Build a relationship with bars, restaurants, clubs..etc. bouncers: I never had to stand in line at clubs because I remember their name and leave a lasting impression everytime. I did the same with the managers. Trust me, people will notice you have a higher status.
4.) Meet people at supermarkets: I can't tell you how many times I have met someone at a supermarket. Ask those around you about a certain product, recruit both men and women.
5.) Sports? If you play any sport then you better hit up that craigslist and see if there are any teams looking for softball players, football, hockey..etc. I actually own a team and I have made many friends from it. Join a team, make some friends and go hang out.
Overall: Be comfortable being independent. I am about to head to London next week on my own because I want to explore and be okay about independent. Discover new things and meet new people. I joined a pub crawl with people I don't know but I sure will make some penpals at the end of my trip.
Have fun, be social and CONFIDENT!
