Hey,
This has bothered me for years and years.
Im white, 24 years old from the UK.
I have like, zero facial hair.

Its bugged me for ages, and im sure its a result of having low testosterone levels. I've brought this up with my GP 2 times and was fobbed off both times with him denying me a blood test.

Some people say 'its just genetics'. However, how can this be true?
For example, when a woman takes testosterone (FTM's) they always seem to get good facial hair. Surely its not 'in THEIR genetics', either.... They were born women!

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Anyone here of a similar age with no facial hair whatsoever?

cheers

When you say that you have no facial hair, you mean that you have none or that you have not enough to be satisfied?

Anyway just know that many guys grow facial hair later than others even if at 24 it should be almost over.

I mean that I have none. I can grow a tiny bit of 'stubble' in the moustache area and can count the rest of the hairs on my face with 2 hands.

Im actually nearly 25. I could pass for about 17, lol.

I have a large group of friends i socialise with and about 95% of them have had thick, dense facial hair for about 8 years now.

Im pretty much certain that i have low testosterone levels and it often plays on my mind

Lower testosterone levels would influence your muscle mass and behaviour too.
If your lack of facial hair is due to genetic reasons you should be normal in all the other "manly" things,if it's because of low test levels you can see by looking at the rest of your body and behaviour, hows you sex drive and strenght?

Not sure what to say about 'behaviour'. How does testosterone effect behaviour? Isn't behaviour based more on your experiences and social surroundings and your natural personality etc?

From the waist down im quite typically hairy i think, although i do have much less underarm hair than most people and have no chest hair.

Strangely, My strength is probably higher than most of my friends (we used to have weightlifting competitions so I know this), although couldn't you just say that's because i've worked out and most of them dont, and so low testosterone or not, i'll be a little stronger??

as for muscle mass:
I think I have a hard time building muscle and tend to hold on to fat quite stubbornly. This is me at my physical peak. I think that if i had more testosterone i'd be a lot bigger and muscular, becuse although im in OK shape, I put in so much hard work, that the rewards seem dissproportionate.

edit: im not able to upload a pic??

Facial hair is affected by many genetic factors and not just testosterone. The average African American male has more testosterone than the average Caucasian male (we account for this when screening for prostate cancer and BPH) and yet black people on average have less facial and bodily hair than white people.

Hormones do a lot of things and their effects can be complex and varied. Yes, if you artificially boosted your level of testosterone you would grow more facial hair, but it would also cause many negative effects (small testicles for example!). Non-testosterone drugs can also induce extra hair growth in both men and women (Rogaine/minoxidil for example).

Ironically, testosterone is also what causes male pattern baldness. Do we assume that every bald guy is an alpha male with a whole bunch of testosterone?

Some guys just have lower amounts of facial hair than others. You seem to be an otherwise normally developed male. You don't have anything to worry about.

Tell your GP to get fvcked.

Go to another one and ask for a blood test, saying that your weightlifting coach tells you to get one so he can give you the right training program.

It's a good thing to know so you can plan your diet & rest for optimal health & strength.

almost 21, not much facial hair either. Kinda like it though - less shaving, less hassle. Not much of a fan of accidental razor burn either.

All in all though, I'm sure eventually a thick bush will be covering your face. Got to happen sooner or later.

Just shave a lot. I don' know if the chemicals in shaving cream have something in them but the more frequently you shave the faster your facial hair grows.

The moment you see even a little bit of hair on your face shave. Don't wait for it to grow long this works by shaving the hair while it's short.

I am 25, can hardly grow much facial hair. I used to hate it but the older I get, the more I like it. I rarely have to buy razors (for a refill pack it's like 16 bucks around here), when people guess my age I get a LOT of 19, 20 (I do have a "baby face" tho). Oh, and random younger girls talk to me/are more receptive cuz they think I'm they're age and think I'm just lovely. Although I don't really seriously consider young girls other than for casual sex. Maybe its just that I was dumb at that age, or maybe young girls are getting even less intelligent as time goes on.

I often wondering the same thing OP. I think there IS connection. As others said it doesn't ALWAYS mean it, but I think there is one.

I have been wondering about my test levels, I should prob get a blood test done. But what would they do if they found out I had low test..? What CAN you do?

I am a skinny dude, pretty much always had a good body though, some ab definition and pecks, but little arms and legs.

I can grow a bottom half goatee and a mustache. I'm just starting to get small fill ins on my cheeks. I'm nearly 24 btw.

The doc will administer testosterone injections, most likely into your glute. It's the same exact thing as taking steroids, but you'll be able to do it legally, and at much lower doses than the average aspiring bodybuilder.

If you look around hard enough, you'll get a doc to diagnose you with low T and prescribe injections for you.
Do you mean even if you don't have it you could find one? lol...

[Edit]: I should also note I was a late bloomer, were you OP?

I prob started growing pubes at like 16. Really sucked for me being in the shower / locker room in 8th grade seeing everyone else with pubes while I didn't have jack.

I am very disappointed to hear from you that a GP rejected TESTS??

Well, (blood) tests are the key for true medical diagnosis, so they should be done even if a small suspicion exists for a disease. So, my suggestion is to immediately replace your GP that "rejects tests as unnecessary".

I have been living with poor testosterone levels for many years, I had good mustaches, rare beard and no chest hair. Eventually at age 28 I got tested for my blood testosterone level, that was only 20% of the ideal value, and if it had been a bit lower I could become impotent.

Now I receive testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) that restored my blood testosterone to high levels, my facial hair become thicker and started growing my chest hair... even some on the back!

The most interesting thing I've experienced when having high blood testosterone is the high libido, with erections that may last for more than 2 hours in total per day (if you are lucky and may spare that much time each day... you will become a sexual monster!) and with increased penis sensitivity.

In my country of Macedonia (in SE Europe) testosterone shots (testosterone enanthate 250mg, that dissolves into the blood within a week) are available not only as prescription drugs, but are legal to be bought off-the-counter from a pharmacy. Other steroids (substances similar to testosterone) are available on the black market, but for men that have low natural testosterone, the best options are testosterone enanthate (weekly shots costing 1.5$) and testosterone dodecanoate (many times more expensive shots, to be applied on 2-3 months).

Go to a school biology lab and jerk off onto a slide. 1500x should be enough magnification to tell the truth.

If the guys don't show up or don't swim, testosterone shots are not the answer. They tell your brain to completely shut down your testes, which is the opposite of what you want. What's more, all androgens except the strong male hormone DHT are converted into estrogens, which makes things worse. T shots are a temporary fix that wreak permanent havoc.

Better to take DHEA supplements. Try that for awhile. Up the dosage if it's not sufficient. If after a year you don't notice more hair, try Clomid or another antiestrogen that stimulates your testes.

While I'm sure you've seen enough semen to tell the difference, he does not.

Better go get a blood test and go from there.

Why do you want facial hair? On 50% of people who have facial hair it looks horrible.

Not to mention the fact shaving every 1-3 days gets annoying very fast. Trust me, you don't want the first thing you do every morning to be the action of dragging a razor across your face. It seriously sucks.

No, that’s an optical illusion.
The hair shaft tapers at the end. “When you shave it, you’re crossing the midshaft, so it seems like it’s thicker and more coarse,” explains Dr. Robin Ashinoff, director of cosmetic dermatology at Hackensack University Medical Center. “But it’s not.”

The stubble feels stiffer because it’s cut straight across, exposing the thicker part of the shaft, and because it’s short. “As it gets longer it feels softer,” says Dr. D’Anne Kleinsmith, a dermatologist in West Bloomfield, Mich. Hair may also look darker after you shave, but that's not true either. “You just see these little dots against your normal skin color, and it just looks that way,” says Kleinsmith.
