Ever notice how some guys are just naturally very big and muscular, in fact totally ripped even? They're just born that way and don't even have to work out, or if they do lift some weights it's just out of boredom and not enough to explain how buff they are. A small percentage of the population I'm sure, but they're there. They must just have very good genes.

I'm not even sure what my point is. I'm just amazed that some guys can have a great physique without having to work for it I guess. Maybe it will catch up with them later in life, or they'll have to learn to start working out to keep it.

Working in the male entertainment industry, I've definitely seen guys that are similar to what you're talking about. A couple of my buddies (both black Jamaican guys) are similar to that. One's always got a 6 pack, and while not shredded, he's always got great muscle definition and symmetry despite only working out 1-2x a MONTH! That being said he was considerably bigger and leaner when he would train on a regular basis, but just getting by on genetics now.

Growing up on a farm and working construction when I was younger gave me awesome arms but zero chest or shoulders.

I don't get your point either.

My coach told me that back before the discussion of genetics was common place in athletic circles, guys simply did not focus on this stuff. They just worked to be the best.

The people who have a tendency to think that others exhibiting an above average skill-level or trait are naturally so tend to be less successful then the people who think such a skill or trait can be possessed through hard work.

Not my rhetorical bullsh1t; studies have shown this to be true.

In fact, one psychologist goes on to say that you should never praise your child for being talented: "Wow, kiddo, you're really good/talented/natural at that." Rather, when your child accomplishes something, the praise should focus around the effort involved: "You worked really hard on that. Good job."

Idea being that "talent-praise" does not reinforce work ethic. A consequence is that when a child sees someone in the future that is better than him, he will chalk it up to that person being even more talented, and give up. And there is always someone better out there.
