Here's a more recent (compared to high school) example of a self-esteem killer.
When I was 24, a friend worked for a dating service. The friend encouraged me to join. When I went to the office to sign up, the director of the dating service was asking me some screening questions. Everything was going well initially. Then the director got to the question of whether I own a car.
When it came out that I don't own a car, the director's behavior became condescending. The director had an attitude of "How dare a car-less man try to pollute our dating service."
The director also acted like I was ignorant of how dating works. She said "When you go on a date with a woman, you pick her up in your car."
How stupid of the director. When a woman meets a guy through a dating service, he's a total stranger at first. It would be inadvisable to get into a car with a stranger on a first date anyway. How about letting me join the dating service, have both parties get ourselves to the first date separately, then let the woman decide whether she's willing to continue the relationship upon finding out I don't own a car.
When I got home from the dating service screening, I treated myself to an escort. When I told the escort about the mishap with the dating service, the escort said that's discriminatory how they wouldn't let me join just because I don't own a car, especially when I live in a big city. The escort also said escorts are better than dating anyway. The escort said "It's common to spend up to $100 on a date. Then there's not even any guarantee of sex. Meanwhile, you could pay me $120 for guaranteed sex."
I know escorts will say anything to boost their business. In this case though, the escort had a point.
