Re Confessions.
I have a pic with Nickelback when they were still ROCK...Creed was good when they came out. Much harder. I feel alot of bands start that way. They cater to the crowd they're facing, which is "bar" music. Alot of my friends were heavy in that scene, getting down as far as Boston to play in pretty good-sized bars before giving up on trying to go big. They introduced me to Creed back in the mid 90's, and same with Nickelback. My buddies did alot of hardcore, bar music, that was about drinking, fvcking, and fighting.
Then they get big, and they get money, and they think..."eh, why not use computers to make us sound BETTER and more CORPORATE." Basically...sell out. They cater to the MASS market, rather than to their original fan base which got them there. I hate creed's stuff, and when girl's say "I love nickelback." I know they weren't around when they were a bit harder and faster paced. Back then, they didn't do love or sap ballads. Just fireworks, hard fast guitars. Bah...sucks, because I feel stupid putting it on anymore. I loved MY OWN PRISON by CREED and SILVERSIDE UP by nickelback. Lead of Men? Song still rocks.
It's money, man. Pure and simple. Small bands have the luxury of NOT caring what anybody things and trying stuff out. Ever since POP bands, a model has been made where ANYONE can go big if they have malliable look. Who would think Clay Aiken or that grey haired guy could do anything remotely close to what they've done? Not me. Not way back when. But the Spears' of the world, the OTOWN's, and MTV have worked MORE to churn out crap and make it a system of producing MONEY, than anything. FEW singers can say they're THAT good without a wonderful sound system, when way back when, ALL you had was your voice. NOW, a hot chick can have her voice perfected, sell cd's b/c she portrays an image. BAM.
I think Christina Aguilera has a nasty voice. I don't listen to her stuff, but I've always liked her b/c she's never really been OUT there, on the front page. Yeah, she's done maxim, but she's still hot, and she's MORE herself than any female singers. I think you can cite many better singers...but I don't listen to them much.
I've been listening to The Decemberists, DMB still, HURT, In Flames, and some of the new bands posted here.
Like some of you, my bro has a discernable ear, and HATES common bands or the mainstream, so I listen to alot of old school jazz and rock.
