Music is my main passion, always has been, and since getting the non-matrix mindset it's really sucked listening to the songs I loved growing up and wanting to throw up listening to the lyrics today. Really sucks. This is probably why I mainly listen to instrumental/upbeat dance music now.

Well Warboss you've narrowed your age to somewhere in the mid to late thirties. Any of my friends who listen to Rainbow are within that age bracket.
I'm 21, and I listen to Rainbow - they rock. I've been meaning to get my hands on a copy of their self-titled debut for a while now, but I've got "Rising," and it kicks ass.

This post absolutely blows my mind.

A classic example of what happens when you become entrenched in sosuave dogma.

I hope I am not the only one that can see what is wrong here.

Well, whatever. Most songs I grew up with (80s, 90s pop songs) sung by men, are of men supplicating and begging for love, begging to be taken back by the chick, and taking pride in letting their emotions control them. Not to say there's not a place for all emotions in music, there is.... Glad to blow your mind though.

Snoop " *****es ain't **** but hoes and tricks"

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.

well, if i understand it well, you are talking about backstreet boys type of music? these songs suck, matrix mindset or not. Pop from the 90s is garbage so i m glad you re done listening to that bs.

As for your first statement, that you cannot listen to songs that have "AFC lyrics" in them, i feel like that really shows your limitations when it comes to music. I m a huge hip hop fan and that s how i got into funk and, more recently, soul. Marvin gaye, al green, curtis mayfield, james brown, tower of power, the isley brothers... Ya, if you look at the lyrics from a sosuave addict point of view they suck, they re too AFC. But you are missing the bigger picture: the poetry, the powerful emotions... that s what soul is all about. Even though i m not saying I would follow their lead when it comes to women, i can still listen to these songs and enjoy them, without letting what i ve learned on here blind me to the beauty of their music

Well, this conversation about reset's musical tastes is interesting.

I wonder, since I'm in the same boat as reset, are we meant to be ashamed of ourselves for taking lyrics too seriously?

I no longer appreciate music that advocates an AFC ethos. When a musician takes the time to tell a story with words and sound, he must be somewhat convinced of the seriousness of his message or the feeling he expresses. People say its just music, but good music takes hours and hours to compose. People who express an AFC worldview in their music are serious about it, no joke, this is truly what they want to bring across.

I used to listen to Morrissey and the Smiths... can't anymore.

see, here s the problem: some of the best music and literature (especially poetry) has been written/composed by heart-broken men. And they are expressing their true feelings. I understand that you no longer share their view on life but you can't dismiss their feelings about women(and the art that they produce based on those feelings) just because you don't feel the same way.

Also, there is more to a song than just the lyrics. If you like the music, then you don't necessarily have to take those lyrics to heart.

Let me put it another way: do you think everyone who listened to gangsta rap (and i m talking about the good old days of the pac-biggie feud, not the 50 cent and other various fake gangsta rappers today) was busy pimpin girls, selling drugs and trafficking weapons?

So you can still listen to the smiths and morrisey without crying yourself to sleep over some girl not returning your advances

 lol

Perhaps eventually, yeah maybe youre right. I'm gonna go give "Every Day is Like Sunday" a listen and see if I can laugh at it from the perspective of a DJ overlooking the world from Mount Olympus. :)

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

I am a huge Morrissey and Smiths fan, I've actually posted about this... There are actually several songs that aren't depressing when you think about it. For every depressing one there's a funny one. I'd say it's half and half.

But I no longer identify with the "lonely misunderstood artist", which I was for about 28 years or so, lol. But I'm also not going to just throw out my entire history. So, I listen to the smiths and morrissey still---but just not the "I am so lonely" songs.

Technical you should check out the song "at last I am born" from his new album.

I listen to just about everything. Music is my passion. I have extremely refined tastes. I'm sure I could go head to head with you and see who's "musically limited"

But I like some of the stuff you mentioned. Since coming to sosuave I went from lots of depressing stuff to lots of soul, funk, disco, house, etc.

I actually like the same music I always have, but I don't RELATE and IDENTIFY with some of those heartbroken messages, like I did before. I think that's the key. I remember what it's like and sometimes It's comforting to hear, but I've changed, and the music I listen to changes as well.

But, I still listen to Depeche Mode, the Cure (especially the angry, harder/faster tracks) Smiths, on a regular basis.

Thanks reset, I'll check it out.

The whole lonely artist thing aside (which I understand perfectly well BTW), Morrissey and Smiths hit on some ethereal sounds which I just cant find anywhere with the same spirit. For some reason my soul is totally tuned into that frequency, NOT because I get off on sadness but because of the sound they chose. I dont like the whole jagoff sadness thing but "Every Day is Like Sunday" and other songs just resonate with me so deeply. You guys know what I mean? I feel like that music is made just for me.

I hear you. Funny thing is they were pretty damn unique. Lots of people try to imitate that but it's hard to do. Have you heard of Belle & Sebastian? They're kind of like that, their albums have been hit or miss over the years. Suede (london suede) is another band that comes to mind.
