There are those people on the boards who make out with a different chick every time they go out, even if its to get the mail.

However, one of my "DJ" type friends just got Mono and he hasn't kissed more than 5 different girls in the past few months.

Is there any way to avoid getting mono, or a way to find out if she has it before you play tonsil hokey with the girl? Or does almost every DJ get mono at one point or something?

Short of asking "excuse me, but do you happen to have mononucleosis?", no. An interesting bit of information is that once you have mono, you have it forever.

For mono information, go here:

http://familydoctor.org/077.xml

Or, do a search with google on "mononucleosis".

By the way, H&F.

I've kissed a hella lot of girls and never got it! I guess you just make sure the person whom you kiss isn't hacking and coughing and sneezing to begin with.

Yes the symptoms of the virus (sickness, headache etc) go away, but you will always carry it within you and will be able to pass it on to others.

Mono is not a huge deal. I had it in high school. You can get it a lot of ways besides kissing someone (drinking after them, picking up germs from a computer keyboard, desk, etc). You get sick with some flu-like symptoms and you get extreme fatigue for a while. Then after a while you're fine, no harm done. A lot of people get mono at one point or another.

Basically the point is that you don't have to catch it by kissing a girl. There are any number of other ways to catch it.

Here's the deal with mono,

it's caused by something called the "epstein-barr virus". It is EXTREMELY CONTAGIOUS! The kissing disease is a nickname. You can get it by drinking after someone who has it, breathing their cough in, shaking their hand after they wiped their nose and then eating something...etc. It's really easy to catch from someone who has it.
It sticks around inside your body for 3 months, and is contagious for almost the entire time I do believe.
For those who have had it, you will know that the symptoms are like the flu, except it lasts for like 3 weeks, and is 1000 times worse. It weakens you to the point of being unable to get out of bed. When I had it, I lost 20 pounds from it in 2 weeks. It's ridiculous. Not only that, drinking booze during that time can kill you easily. Not a good thing to have.
On the bright side, it goes away after a while. It isn't an STD or something like that.
Don't be scared about making out with a ton of girls. It's a chance you have to take. They probably don't have mono, but you never know. Who cares though!? Just do it. Its not like unprotected sex( big NO NO), its just kissing.

I've had a couple friend who had it. One just recently. You do get very fatigued and it is very contagious. You MUST rest. Get too active and well, say goodbye to your spleen. It will rupture and that will likely be the end of you. For real.

Oh man, I have a funny story about this, haha, but it's pretty long and I gotta get to bed. Sorry, maybe write it some other time. hahah I laugh just thinking about it.

yea I had it last year....

Im a souphmore in College , I cought it when I was a freshmen, I was to bured out , lack of sleep and over drinking can be hell on your body , even though I was in the best shape I have even been in my life , I cought it ,I was swiming , lifting and running at least 6 days a week, but I cought it becouse my body was worn out , but the side effect only lasted about 4 days thanks to that , my best advice is stay away from anyone that you know that has it .

I cought it from drinking after a freind at a party , I was drunk and thought the alchool would kill the germs , no such luck , I( lost about 10 pounds of mucle thanks to mono .

I even made out with this girl regurly and she never cought it , it just depends , the only advice I can give you is sleep as normal as posible and work out .

Maybe they had already gotten it before. I had it my senior year in high school and typically it works like chicken pox -- after you catch it, you can be around people who have it without it affecting you.

Not to resurrect a dead thread...

found out today that I might be getting a visit from the ol' big M in a few weeks. I have a couple of questions:

1) will I be able to play playstation?
2) How much will my current physical shape affect how long I have the symptoms? I work out 3-4x a week, if that means anything.
3) Does this mean I should go for 2 1/2 months of no play or risk passing it on to the person?

1.) Yes, unless you have it bad enough that you have to be hospitalized (I spent two nights in my college's infirmary).

2.) The doctor will tell you to stop working out for six weeks. Mono takes lots of rest to recover from, and vigorous physical activity will only increase the chances that symptoms will return.

3.) The bacteria that cause mono stays in your body for the rest of your life, so there is ALWAYS some remote chance you can pass it on to someone. You may be more contagious at certain times though, I'm not positive about that.

You can't have too much physical activity but that doesn't proclude it. I had to quite wrestling because it's a contact sport but I was allowed to go to the gym.

For me it just made my so sore I couldn't even swallow jello. I didn't get the tired thing everyone talks about.

If you are in high school or younger it will last for about a week and if you are older it will last about a month. It sucks when you have it but it's no big deal. And it's called the kissing disease for no apparent reason. Like Gio said, you can get it from pretty much anything.

I had it as a senior in high school and I had it for a long-ass time.
