I think MMA and the like can be good for fitness and developing confidence but you also need to remember that at the end of the day all of the disciplines associated with it (boxing, kickboxing, brazilian jiu jitsu, etc.) are sports that have rules. In street fights or in self defense scenarios there are no rules. You have no idea if that person may or may not be armed, That person could grab objects around them, one rock hit to the side of your head and you are now a human vegetable. You might know bjj and when you are rolling around on the ground he pulls out a knife and stabs you between the ribs or one of his buddies stomps your head in.

Granted, some of this stuff is better than having no training at all but you should never feel that this will be all that important outside of a gym.

There are too many variables in street fighting to answer this question. Street fighting could mean in a grass backyard vs one opponent or it could mean outside of a bar on concrete versus many opponents. Each situation requires vastly different strategies.

I have been training as a hobby for a few years now. I do not compete in MMA I just train. This is my very humble opinion. I am no way GSP or anything like that. The real benefit of MMA training is confidence. Most fights are started because men are insecure. Learning MMA will erase most of that insecurity. You will be more likely to walk away from a confrontation.

Another benefit is basic boxing footwork. You can defeat most untrained men by just jabbing and circling out. If you learn a little BJJ ( blue belt) you can survive on the ground if it ends up there.

Story time: My sister went out to the bar district with her bf. Some guys started hitting on her while her bf walked away. The bf politely confronts them. They ignore him and one guy sucker punches him and runs. The guy's friend also sucker punches my sisters bf and then also takes off. MMA and basic self defense awareness would have changed the outcome of this event.

MMA would have trained my sisters bf on how to deal with punches. Proper self defense training would have told him to keep his hands by his face when dealing with potential aggressors. He also would have had a plan or combination in mind in case things got ugly. MMA trains you to have a plan for everyone. For example, "okay if he gets aggressive he is about my size, so I will do a body lock takedown and mount him" etc......or " if he gets aggressive I will be on guard for telegraph movements and teep kick this fool in his gut". This is how MMA makes you think.

And probably the most effective move is to just stab someone's eyes with your fingers, which synergises well with keeping your hands up. Even professional fighters can go 5 rounds without managing to finish each other despite winging everything they've got, both ending up exhausted, but one good eye poke and they come to an immediate stop.

This.

Remember, people in general are becoming more and more cowardly - they love the sucker punch. The key is awareness.

Yes young brotha. It is way better than nothing. It will prepare you for one on one situations in a controlled environment. It will not prepare you 100% for the streets because too many variables. No system can 100% prepare you for the streets. Even having a gun isn't 100%.

Start training now. It will be one of the best decisions you ever made. I started when I was 33. When my life is going to crap the only thing that reliably makes me happy is that MMA gym. Training will also help you with women. You will be more indifferent to them because you have another passion in your life. They will be able to smell it. My ex hated that I liked BJJ more than her. She knew if she ever left I would low key still be happy. I didn't use her to fill that void in my life. Training filled that void.

Peace and Quiet

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

And you will be able to relax and to live your life in peace and quiet.

My thing is how can a man look at his reflection knowing that he sucker punched another man? Or knowing he jumped another man? So I grew up in a middle class black neighborhood. I got jumped once and the guys bragged about it. Well duh you are going to win if you got 3 people and its only me. Thats like bragging about beating a much weaker person.

Btw did you see footage of Tyron Woodley keeping his cool in Jake Pauls locker room. Smart move. He prob wasn't afraid at all of the one on one, he was afraid of them jumping him.

Round house kicks? Common, they're about as practical as throwing ninja stars.

Sorry guys, I hate MMA.

Your sister would be dead and probably her bf too. I agree with your first paragraph, not the second. MMA and the MAJORITY of the people who train in it and teach it are gym bro meatheads, cops and bouncers who want to throw their weight around because they realize they wasted all this time in the gym with little to show for it. MMA is basically all the guys who are wannabe bad asses and want to pretend that they are going to the Octagon for a shot at the belt. They're martial art SPORTS FANS. They might learn a couple of punches and kicks but they know everything there is to know about MMA superstars, their win counts and weight classes. They visualize themselves as these ring lords, bouncing around with their hands up as if their in front of a studio audience. MMA doesn't train you to deal with the guy who is getting up after you wack him to hammer your head in with a brick or broken bottle or waiting for you outside with a pipe wrench. It doesn't give you eyes in the back of your head and doesn't train you to deal with multiple attackers (that's Hollywood). It gives you a seriously fall sense of security as you try to apply rules to a place that have none. Most normal people can't take a punch. Anyone here who has been knocked out, knows that as soon as that happens, you are on the ground for a good 5 minutes while you see stars. You are basically dead. If no one is around, your attacker is going to either kick you in the face until your skull caves in or keep hammering away until you are a brain dead pulp. I don't know where people get off thinking they can just punch a guy or put someone in a headlock and that 'Tap Out' means a handshake at the end. Oh yeah --> MMA.

This bar fight baloney can be easily avoided by situational awareness, why are you in a bar in the first place? Someone grabs your girlfriend? 911. If you choose to sort it out, you are risking death or irreversible brain damage. Most things can be sorted with a bit of communication. If you are some drunk MMA wannabe, the first thing you are doing is trying to size up the guy, stupid stupid stupid... This is Gym bro behavior. Pushing and shoving? That's telegraphing that you are Hollywood and not ready for a reality check. Someone with a bit of training, is going to capitalize on this opportunity, close in quick, either knock you out, slash you with a knife or grab your head, twist it and throw you [Judo] before you can react. But really, they should be buying you a beer first, making friends and then letting the air out of your tires with a switch blade and stealing your cell phone when you're drunk.

But lets talk realism here, damage, I had a guy hit me on my head with the flat end of a long sword and it busted my neck and gave me a concussion. I was in a radar for months before I got proper treatment. This was during training too, but the amount of pain, mixed with stars... this was an accident, outside of school, no one is coming back from that to throw a punch, you are fcked. period. Now your girl is too. Great. A gun would have sorted everything right quick.

A person should learn to fight so that they never have to. You learn so you realize that haymakers and karate kicks are just for show. Real fights don't end with a victor, everyone loses. You should figure a way to bow out, apologize and leave if you can. Most guys just want their ego stroked because they are insecure losers who spend the majority of their day staring into a mirror at the gym and wacking off to gay porn at night. A fight with a black belt might last a second or two, while an MMA guy is going to try and take this to ground and do all kinds of fancy bs while he mouths' off and gloats. Either way, you now have to find a way to get to Mexico without being spotted first. The guys on TV? Please fellas that's Hollywood. There are no rules in real life.

Kyle Rittenhouse should have ran for the border. Learn from his mistakes, don't go looking for trouble, don't telegraph it and once you do something, get in and get out because the police are not your friend.

My own mma trainer has a background in japanese jiu jitsu and I think okinawan karate. He hated mma's rules. He spent ten years training how to kick a guy in the nuts amd more importantly defend against that move, and was disappointed it was banned. Before fighting had rules, that was a very important move. For one of his karate belts, he was the first white guy in north america to be awarded that belt, because before he did his forms to judge, he had to endure a full force punch by his instructor to the stomach, the face, and a kick to the groin.

I encourage everyone to train any combat sport that interests them. And you can train for street fighting scenarios. Sticks are the first weapon to learn. If that makes you chuckle, then you have never been in a joint lock with one. I have seen tough guys fall down and cry from the pain of a cheap papermate pen locked against a knuckle. Nunchucks are actually two sticks, mostly meant to use a pinchers. No one ever wanted to train nunchucks a second time. And those sai fork things, if people knew how they were meant to be used, we wouldnt let little kids play with plastic ones.

Bjj is often part of mma training. I think of it as an important life skill that you don't ever want to have to use. It mostly saves your ass when you are losing. I knew a guy who did not train and was murdered in a street fight by a guy who sat on his chest and pummeled him. Basic bjj would have saved his life.

In closing, in my somewhat educated opinion, training is great, everyone should do it. But the best real world fight move is probably kicking the other guy in the nuts before he sees it coming and then running away.

Makes sense. I can see that. Little do they know he is a killer. People disrespect him but in his prime Woodley was amazing. The guy is 38yrs old. Of course he is going to lose fights. His time is over but he still is going to be a Hall of Famer. I hope he sends Jake paul back to Disney lol

Yeh brotha I never said round house kick. If you look at my post you will see I said teep kick. A Thai style teep kick is very effective and practical. There is very little telegraph especially if done with the lead leg. I agree with some of the other stuff you posted. You made decent points.

I wasn't really responding to your message so much as going off on a tangent. :D

Big or small, within reason, I'd get down, sweep the leg and get the dude into neck and leg lock until he either yields or falls a sleep. They're expecting you to step back or throw, not sweep, take down and force him into submission. Obviously, with more than one dude, this wouldn't be possible.
