This is silly.

It's perfectly normal for a woman to ask if you have a dog, when you are petting hers.

Analogous example. I love certain motorcycles. Occasionally, I'll see one I like and go over and take a closer look at it and ask the owner about it. What would you think his natural question to me might be?

Come on man.

That's more of a niche interest.

A better analogy might be:

A mom who dates only single dads is walking in the park with her kids.

One of the kids jumps in your way and says "HI!"

You stop and say "hi" back.

The mother, with expectant and judgmental eyes blurts "So do you have kids???"

MILFs are shameless these days more than ever.

Never been asked this.
I haven't been asked this either. Neither women with kids (rarely interact with them) or childless women have asked. Sometimes I will pet a dog if doing an approach in the park/on the street/on a walking path and the woman has a dog with her. I don't go out of my way to pet the dog but sometimes it'll make sense to do during the interaction.

It's called "making conversation"

They’ve long been referred to as man’s best friend, and now new research from Mintel reveals that no one loves their mutt quite as much as American men. Today, some seven in 10 (71%) younger men aged 18-44 own a dog compared to just three in five (60%) of their female counterparts.

Mintel research on US pet ownership reveals that while the majority (67%) of Americans own a pet, dogs are the nation’s number one furry companion with half (50%) of all Americans owning a dog. This rises to 52% of all US men, compared to 49% of women. Older Millennials in particular make up a large portion of the nation’s dog lovers as three quarters (75%) of consumers aged 30-39 own a dog.

If a woman asks you this she is most likely interested in you and is trying to find a point of commonality. They perceive a pet owner to be more caring and nurturing, which are traits many of them look for in a mate.

I am a countercultural guy as a non-pet owner.
