I don't like the fact that the US is now treating Websites like drug dealers. The US has confiscated this Hong-Kong-based company's assets and domains without a trial and without a hearing. It has arrested foreign nationals outside of our own country and confiscated their possessions on the say so of the MPAA (not exactly the most reliable of sources). On top of all this, the company has endorsements from celebrities in the very same fields the company is accused of pirating. The Electronic Frontier Foundation summed it up by saying the arrests set “a terrifying precedent. If the United States can seize a Dutch citizen in New Zealand over a copyright claim, what is next?” The US is basically denying due process to these individuals. Go to court, have a trial, and if these folks are found guilty, then dismantle their sites and have them pay fines, not take everything and leave them no choice but to plea bargain. Wikipedia has a list of indictments and some of them are pure fantasy. Basically any business activity can be labelled "money laundering" and every ISP and file-storage Website is breaking the law. Google violated millions of copyrights by putting online nearly every book in the English language and I didn't see the government shutting them down.

I'm still looking
Never mind the politics behind copyright infringement...

Who cares that the site went down? It only means that another, yet similar site will take its place. So downloaders everywhere, fear not.

MU was a pioneer. It just got too big for its own good. Rapidshare is next.

Forget software piracy, what's REALLY going on is a war on freedom of speech. Right now I can say

911 was an inside job

Later on FBI will show up at my door and question me, and shut down my internet.

the idea isn't so much that there won't be anyplace to download/upload files, but rather the movement of america towards rights violations and acting outside the constitutional guidelines. the 2011 national defense authorization act was one more step towards that direction - a stipulation stating that anyone suspected of aiding terrorists can be held and prosecuted without due process. Everyone was up in arms about it, but I read it for myself and sent a letter to the senator. This was to no avail. I got a canned response back indicating others were righting regarding the same issue.

America is headed in the wrong direction. Many of its citizens are aware of this, but are powerless to do much due to the large disconnect between us and the people we put in office.

edit: I do not download illegal software or media. My point of contention the misuse of power by those who have it. One might pose a question: if stealing is illegal, and acting outside of our nations constitution is as well, why are some afforded these lienencies, while others are not?

1. Google does not upload ebooks to the webs, it just indexes websites that upload them. The closest Google has come to it is with GoogleBooks which has nowhere near every book in the English language and usually includes only select chapters, content and blocks most of the book with permission from the publishers.

2. I do agree with a lot of your post. The only thing is I wonder why so many were against SOPA and actively protesting it while most people didn't do sh!t about the NDAA and the NDAA was signed in with little public outcry as synergy1 said.

“Why is it that when Republicans and Democrats need to solve the budget and the deficit, there’s deadlock, but when Hollywood lobbyists pay them $94 million dollars to write legislation, people from both sides of the aisle line up to co-sponsor it?”

True however if more sites get taken down then people will start to get scared.

illegal filesharing can't be stopped however they could make it more difficult if all the big sites are taken down.

This whole thing is BULLSH*T!

I dont really care about the illegal downloads - I buy all my own software/music because I believe in supporting artists and developers. What I do care about is the fact that this emerging global syndicate can take down whoever it wants without ever setting foot in court. The US is essentially taking its Patriot Act and trying to move into the global sphere with it.

The punishment for this crime is also absurd. The CEO is facing 50 years in prison. FIFTY F*CKING YEARS! Serial murderers and rapists dont get that long. This guy's only crime was profiting off illegal downloads without paying tribute to the mafia *******s who are trying to run the world like it owns the joint.

In the meantime we have AOL, Disney and many other HUGE multinational corps who not only linked to pirated content, but HOSTED the files on their own servers for well over a decade. Not so much as a slap on the wrist for them. The injustice is f*cking appalling!

Watch this clip, it'll blow your mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc

nice link ninja.

Its funny to watch the giant companies scramble wondering why people don't want to pay for their sub par movies and music.

The more they FAIL (or make bad bets), the moar they crack down. The government and their private business fascist cronies will make You pay for their failures, one way or another. Justice is now spelled "Just Us" (taken from Gerald Celente).

I don't care about copyrights anymore. Why should I care about anyone else's rights if they don't care about mine?

I also don't believe copyright should be transferable. It should only belong to the one who created something for a very limited time. I'll respect the guy who wrote and sang the song, but i don't give a sh1t about the middle man who claims copyright on something that he has little to do with other than advertising and distribution.

An interesting article stating that Mega was destroyed not because of piracy but because it was about to launch a competing tool that would change the landscape of music, movies, all media..decentralize it and allow for monetized distribution even for FREE downloads!..that could never be allowed to fly...Media middlemen will use any and all means to preserve their status as pimps of creativity.

If the automobile industry had been treated this way in its infancy we would still be rolling in horse and buggy.
