The problem with martial art or any other form of improving your physical abilities is overconfidence.

Too many people take up martial arts, either because their parents made them, or they want to feel tough.

And then, as some people have stated, they feel like they can kick anybodies azz.

The truth is, look at this site, if everybody on this site claims to be practicing martial arts, how do you get the advantage?

You dont. It's good if you need it, but, as do many people who took up martial arts and continue on with it in later life, it's not about the toughness or the fighting ability. It's about finding a spirtual, emotional and physical neutral.

Cause no matter how bad you are or think you are, there is alway somebody bigger and badder then you are.

Martial arts isn't about making you the toughest kid on the block, it's about making you smarter and more proud of yourself, so if a situation ever does arise, you can handle yourself with confidence.

I don't think this is always the case. As an extremely competitive individual, I of course like to compete and test my skills against others. But like I said before, I don't do Tae Kwon Do or Shorin-Ryu or any of that stuff, so it's probably different for those that do.

Not everyone is the same.

True...

Overconfidence/Arrogance should be absent when learning the Martial Arts because humility will decrease your chances of getting your ass kicked.

Martial Arts is like dancing but only difference is your throwing kicks and punches.

It all depends on the type of training that you receive. If it focuses completely on repeating techniques and attack/defense drills, I hate to break it to you, but if you start picking fights, chances are that you won't be on the winning end and anything you've learned from the drills will be useless. The school that I go to actually has us fighting with each other, everything from sparring, grappling, reaction weapon disarming and throwing to help us gain experience in street combat.

But what does this have to do with women? Absolutely nothing. If anything, it can make you less attractive. Practicing any martial arts for prolonged periods can create an aggressive, rude, violent and overconfident attitude if the practitioner is not careful. This can manifest itself in anything from obscene amounts of swearing and yelling to pushing people(usually smaller than you) around, many of which are definite turn offs.

Martial arts doesn't build muscles, it builds endurance and confidence, but one thing that a lot of schools lack is the building of control. Being able to kick someone's a$$ in an engagement is easy if you have been training to do. However, surpressing someone in an engagement without hurting him when you can is one of the hardest things to do and it shows how much control you have over yourself.

For example, if you are forced into a fight with someone, your girl is going to respond differently if she sees you permanently cripple and adding unnecessary harm to the other guy when he is obviously no match for you in contrast to you just getting him in an armlock and knocking him out with a quick strike to the temple, which won't permanently cripple the guy.

Granted, it won't always be a one on one fight, you are probably more prone to run into gang fights, which calls for different strategies, and practicing martial arts is good, just make sure that you don't develop the wrong attitude and know what you are doing and what the consequences of your actions are.

Anyone here do Golden Gloves? I know a thing or two (especially about getting hit), but after that I would say I am mostly older and wiser, not just more bold. There's a difference

I had a feeling that you had taken Wing Chun for some reason. Some of things you were saying reminded me of my old classes. Anyways...I decided back in the day to take one of the most direct and effective systems that I could find, and Wing Chun fit what I was looking for. I trained for a few years, and got to the advanced stages of Chi Sao. I sparred a couple of times with kickboxers etc and did not do as well as I should have so me and my partner began to focus on fighting rather than drills. We basically do the same as you. Throw on the UFC style gloves, a mouthpiece, and then we go at it.
Anyways...Train hard, and good luck.

Im into BJJ and kickboxing. i don't mean to brag, but the ability and knowledge that you can go anywhere and knowing that if anything breaks out you can and will put a beating on ANYBODY, is a powerfull fealing. Call me what you will, but I call myself lucky. Lucky to be young and in shape. And lucky to live in a time where BJJ, the greatest thing to EVER happen to martial arts, is here in the USA and I can practice it every day.

Without a doubt, BJJ has increased my confidence more than anything i have ever done in my life. Not all the girls in the world can do that. It has helped 10 times more than Dj'in ever will.

Even though Sak was the Gracie Hunter, BJJ is what spawned Vale Tudo and MMA in modern times (it all dates back to Pankration in ancient Greece... 648 B.C. if I remember correctly). It has evolved a lot since then, to include cross-training which has made straight BJJ pretty much obsolete against a skilled opponent.

On the streets? Give me Muay Thai and boxing any day over BJJ.

LOL,
I never said squat about the gracies. Noticed that I called it BJJ. Sak is a BJJ stylist by the way, LOL. At the very least, he is VERY influenced by it.

Problem with boxing, as soon as you go up against someone who is stronger and a bnetter puncher, without BJJ, your gonna get your tail kicked. And a BJJ guy will beat a non BJJ guy any day of the week, regardless of his punching knowledge. i have beat up several very big, strong strikers before. they don't know squat about BJJ>

Martial arts will do one very good.

If you are looking to just get in shape theres nothing better, however if youre looking to learn to defend yourself or ....be a badass then you better watch what you take.

I used to do kung fu and id really laugh when i see all these karate black belts acting all tough and then they whine when they get hit too hard in a point sparring match

If you want to know that you can defend yourself take boxing , kickboxing or muay thai. Cuz you dont get better at fighting by throwing ****ty punches in the air and doing kata, you get better at fighting by conditioning and actually *gasp* FIGHTING.

I box and kickbox now and i really could give a **** less what people say or do to me cuz i know ive done something that 99% of people in this world will never do and thats step into the ring with someone who has the sole intention to **** their **** up.

As for the bjj being the best art ever.......its good, but pull your head out of your ass and go watch a chuck liddel highlight and see what he does to grapplers... or Mirko Fillopovic, aka, crocop for that matter.

I'l just say what I say for all these types of threads:

Whether it's martial arts, the army, or being a fireman - they don't make you a man. If you join any organization with the intention that it will "manify" you then i'd say your wasting your time.

BJJ dominated Ultimate Fighting back in the day when everybody was preoccupied with representing their style, and no one combined styles. Also, few really knew how formidable expert grapplers can really be. So that's why you got the Karate guy thinking he could take a Jujitsu guy...ignorance.

BJJ is GREAT against a guy who has never fought a grappler before.

Sak does submission wrestling which has been around far longer than BJJ. He is not a BJJ guy by any means. Submissions do not equal BJJ.

I don't do BJJ, but I do do Greco and submission wrestling. PM me and we can arrange a get together if you'd like to see how your BJJ does against a non-BJJ guy.

Im only a blue belt in bjj, but the knowledge has saved my ass a few times...1 vs 1 fighting, bjj will win most of the time (that is if the guy isnt trained in submissions-which most people arent)
I have won a street fight by triangle choke...IT WAS AWESOME! i didnt even punch the guy........However, bjj is not enough. I will start trainning muay-thai to improve my stand up.

Ps. you can teach the girls the guard

*Notice how fighters did back in early 94-95 when they didnt know bjj.
Ps2. Sakuraba does train BJJ

You guys competitively doing grappling styles might like to go look up some pressure point fighting. I've studied a little , and it makes for some kooky sumbission moves when a guy taps out cos you're poking him on TW7 with your index finger :D
