Some of the surveys are quite good from what I have heard. I have been looking at this for a while. There do seem like there are a lot of people who have scams though.

certainly no expert on this, but companies like facebook make all their revenue from advertising since they are frequented so often. Companies pay big money to get their product out there.

In before someone suggests Poker.

Don't do it.

There are plenty of legitimate ways. You just need to research business ideas. One popular idea is online retailing. I've read a lot about it and there are many different avenues you can go down with this.

Just remember you need to work with good people.

Those should get you started.
are you serious?

damnit... I've baited myself into seriously answering this thread.

Look. the CORRECT answer is that you find what you love to do. If what you love to do happens to be something on the internet, than GREAT. if not, that's fine.

when people say they want to work on the internet what they are really implying is that they want to work from home and by that they meant hey want to make moeny without doing ****.

The yellow kid once said that once people get over the notion that you can do get somethig for nothing, the world would be a lot better place and swinders like him (the yellow kid was the greatest con artist in american history) would be put out of business. they pray on people who want something for nothing.

people who pitch you these "great ideas" are selling you the same thing. they know deep down you get off on the idea of sitting at home, working a couple of hours a week and making money that people put in years and long hours to get, while living a lifestyle of luxury.

To thoroughy and legitly answer your original quesiotn, there are tons of things you can do as an online business. But you have to ask yourself what do you want to do.

I've started, ran and sold an online business, an online computer company years ago that affords me to live like I do now. to the person who says don't play poker full time, I spend about 80% of my time now playing the horses and do quite well. But again.. that comes from years of practice and painstaking hours put in honing my skills. not something you can do by picking up a book (or 5) and thinking you can outsmart everyone else. lots of money lost, lots of hard knock lessons to be learned, but if your mind it set to do anything you can do it, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. the question isn't can you do it, it's how bad do you want it and what are you willing to sacrifice to get it.

You have to become an expert in your field. I wasn't so much an expert in how to run a computer company.. I know computers like the back of my hand, i'm a tech by trade, but I became an expert on how to sell things online. That's when the original company I had grew to the point where I was able to sell it, at least my share in it.

I've become an expert on horse racing. bloodlines, who certain tracks play, jockies tendices, horse confirmation, trainers and how they think for the most part.. I generally know more about the up comign race than the next bettor. generally. and I'm able to make a profit becuase of it.

do what you love. do you know how many pepole told me I was a stupid **** for wanting to leave my company and bet on horses for a living? If you want to do something bad enough you will figure out a way to get it done. I love horse racing enough to where I was willing to put in the work to make it happen.

i wanted my first company to succeed so bad I went 3 and a half years without going on a date or having a social life whatsoever. It was worth it to me in the long run. Most people want but don't want to give up anything nor really want to put in any real work.

I've gotten back into (regular) business and I own a web development firm that might very well end up being more successful than my first company if the first year is any indication, and I am starting a niche based social network that i'm dumping a ton of my own personal funds into, but It's for an idea I wholeheartly believe in and I believe in myself. You only live once. I have another idea that I toyed around with, and I'm quite sure it would work, I even bought the domain name for it just in case, but I don't have the time to devote to make it and my social network and my horse racing and my future marriage a success so it's on the backburner for now.

my point is.. Find what you like and treat it like a REAL business. not a get rich quick or how to make money online scam. the money is out there.

Like I said, I own a web development firm. I have 6 employees and every last one of them works from home in various parts of the country. There are legit jobs for people who want to work from home. if you are willing to work and put some time in looking.

To Synergies point (my mom's company is named synergy marketing btw), there are different types of online web based business models you have the ecommerce model (amazon, etc). then you have the marketing angle. the trick is to get as many people on your site and then when you have x amounts of visitors, you have different ways to make money.

You can set up a web ring and install google adsense on the sites, and every time someone clicks on your ads, you get paid. This works. but for you to make any real money you need to be at 90-100k page views a month. But I know people who make well over 100k a year doing this whci hisn't bad.

sitepointforums.com is hands down the best internet marketing forum on the web. I cut my teeth there years ago and learned alot of how internet marketing works and how to make money using it.

Also with that page views this is what I'm diong with my social network, take those page views and put together an avertising package to revelant compaines. For instance, mine is going to be about horse racing. Say we get to the point where we have 5,000 members and we are getting 300k-400k page views a month. I can take that package then go to say, bloodhorse.com and say hey, you want to market on our site, here is the amount of people we are bringing in. Stud farms, Thoroughbred magzines, race tracks, The daily racing forum, etc.

my plan is a hell of alot more extensive than that but you get the drift.

I work from home and I have done so since I sold my first company in 2005. while I am my own boss, I didn't get where I am today by not working my ass off. I generally get up at 5:30 every morning and I am working on one thing or the other until about 10 at night, usually 6 days a week, 5 days a week durning the winter as football is on.

There are days when I dont' want to work or somethig comes up and I will say fvck it. I'm taking the day off. I can do that. but I don't do it often.

all this while working out 6 days a week, reading everyday, making a fiancee happy, playing with a 2 year old son and having a resemblance of a social life. On an avg week I work about 70-80 hours a week. But I would not have it any other way. it's how i'm wired. go hard or go home.

While not disclosing finances, I do very well for myself and there isn't anything I really want that I don't have. I take that back. There is one thing I want.. A house in malibu, that I set for my goal, and truth be told if I wanted to move to malibu tomorrow I could but it would not be the particular house I wanted and it would cause too much financial strain. But that's my new goal. I will own a house on pacific coast highway by the time i'm 30. And not only will I own it, I"m paying for it in cash.

Goals aren't supposed to be easy to get. if they were easy, they wouldn't be goals. I just have to roll up my sleeves and work. I've learned when I do that and don't question or limit myself I can do anything I put my mind to.

what i'm saying is.. be prepared to roll up your sleaves and do some real work. you can throw the concept of 9-5 out the window. you work when work needs to be done.

I'll say this to add and i'll be done to tie in once and for all the "does money matter" arguement when it comes to women becuase I've talked about alot of stuff above.

I've said this until I'm blue in the face but no one will lisen nor wants to.

It's not the money that matters, but people who are successful in life, genearlly have traits that people who are NOT successful do not have.

If you can't tell by my post, I'm extremely sure of myself. This comes off in real life as well. Borderline arrogant. I probably am arrogant by defination. This is not an act or a face. In short, I am sure of myself beuause I have a reason TO be sure of myself. I'm sure I can do anything I put my mind to becuase so far, well, I've done everything I put my mind to and wanted to do. Nothing Breads confidence like accomplishment.

Set goals and hit them, and they will do more for your game with women than any site, lay guide or wardrobe can possibly do. Trust me.

Successful people are hard workers. Successful people are ambitous. Successful people, even AFC successful people, can't devote all their time to "chasing women" beucase they are busy BEING SUCCESSFUL. Successful people know they are a catch, becuase they have done things that the avg person has not done nor will do. They have made it through the traps of life and come out ahead. Successful people are generaly passionate about something in life. I can think of a couple of times that I 've gotten laid, and I"m not making this up, I'd be on a date and we'd talk about what we want to do, and i'd start talking about my goals with horse racing and what my cheif aim in life is and they can see in my eyes I was dead fuvcking serious. I had one woman tell me point blank I wasn't planning on doing anything with you until we started talking about our goals and than you became alot more interesting of a person, and i was interested in seeing how you were in bed.

Anyway I"m long winded.

find what you love

work your ass off

go hard or go home

have no regrets

work hard and play later, or play hard or pay later. your choice.

To add, again the business I own now is a web development firm. To be quite honest, I don't do much actual work there. I have a staff in place and I meet with them once a week and go over progress and other things.

But just beucase this has been a year, I have had to talk to some clients from time to time. Everyday I am amazed at the stupidity of the avg american.

"yeah I want you to build me a site like facebook"......that's when the phone conversation usually ends. I've had people ask me why don't I try to sell them anything and I tell them you are wasting your time with soemoen with a business plan that basic.

or

"We are going to be rich... this is the best thing ever! but we only have like 200 dollars to build this site"

or even worse

And they set it up time and time again by saying " we want someone to build our site who wants to be apart of something special, who is here for the long haul". I already know it's coming. "We dont' have any money, we want you to build a site for sweet equaity".

Now mind you, I have done this in the past. But for me to want to basically pay my employees out of pocket and side with you, you better knock my fvcking socks off with an idea that I have not yet seen before, and with a thorough business plan that I can see working and that I can get excited bout. I can count on my hand the number of sites that we have built for cusotmers that I believe in and believe the owners could do something worth while becuase the avg person is lazy.

the avg person has no imgination, no creative juices, they see sites online they like and want to make one like it to make some money.

then people who build a 5-10k site, who have no idea how to market the site or any thought that you have to actually market the site. I guess they think its' the internet and the field of dreams, if you build it they will come.

Throughout my experiences with trying to make so called "quick money" it can be done. But it doesn't fit the word "Quick" entirely. I just recently started my business which has made me some money all profit. But in order for money to come easier in a business you need to lay EXTENSIVE groundwork. I came up with my business plan one day out of the blue and finished it up later that week. 2 months later i had a website, contracts drawn out, and everything that i needed to offer my clients. Brochures, presentations, and even a few employee's that work on call. Then i went out and played a numbers game with clients and in about 2 weeks i got my first two clients and i have been working with them since. When you have a great foundation that can support you, people are more willing to listen. They're willing to listen because you're organized, structured, and you understand what you're doing because you had to organize and structure everything. Everything just kind of comes to you. Right now my business is part time and i work on it WHENEVER i want to because i created it that way. Life is what you make of it but you can't crumble and fall before every obstacle in your path. Kick some of them down, jump over the others, and the others will just work themselves over time and experience.

bwahaha the plot thickens!

Its how dreamers think. The guy who started our company is like this, but he made the mistake of bringing two hardcore engineers on board. Our world is based in reality; no one is going to jump on board based on a vague premonition of "something special". He believes people will rally around a noble cause, while us engineers feel people will rally around money. I hate using cliche words like dichotomy, but his and ours are basically polar opposites.

I remember my company the first one, the thought of giving up a peice of my company to have a 2 thouand dollar website build was not even comprehendable. We just saved the money and got it done. This was before I had any type of real html skills.

You don't give up your companies equity for something that can be gotten by hard work, like 2 grand or so.

in fact you saving the money and paying for your site shows your committment.

How did you know to sell your share of the company and become a handicapper? I know you said it's your passion, but I guess my question is at what moment did you realize what your passion was? Tough way to phrase it I suppose.

What made you decide to rejoin the tech-industry and begin another business if you had already made enough to pursue your life long dream as a handicapper?

I have been going to the horse track since i was 8. My passion in life is not so much gambling, but horse racing. I just want to be around it as much as I possibly can.

I did not sell my company just to do that, I sold my company becuase I got tired of my business partners **** and there were offers and I was getting burned out/ wasn't fun anymore.

It's something I always wanted to do but never really had the balls to do it until I had some financial backign to make it happen and take a risk.

I rejoined the tech industry beucase I like web development enough to put work in and there are a shortage of good us based web development compaines that don't pillage customers.

I'm just 26 years old. I was 25 when I started the company (the new one). the thought of me sitting at home not doing anything for the rest of my life got old and bored. It had been about 3 years since I sold the company. The idea of starting something new by myself this time without the busienss partner, was enticing to me. Entraprenurers start comapines. it's what we do. Oncet his is where I want it to be and I can devote the time to it I am going to have the social network business going, and once I have that going I will have my own horse racing stable, that's two additional seperate businesses right there.

Plus there are a bunch of web ideas that I want to impliment and I have a son now and while I have money I like the idea of putting eggs in more than one basket. you can never have too much money.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

that's not easy, its takes countless hours of practice in order to acquire skill in poker. I've played my fair share and made my money and lost it. It also takes control to keep the money you've made or to cut yourself off when your not doing well.

Here is a perfect examnple

I got up at 6 this morning.

I had alot on my plate today and if I want to be able to actually go to the track this week at hollywood park which is about an hour and 45 min drive from here given the traffic, I need to load up on monday-wednesday.

Talking to clients and revamping proposals, and (long story) I knocked my front tooth out my mouth over the weekend so I had to go to the denist... long story short. It's 12:30 in the morning here and I"m still working. Still have about 2-3 more hours worth of work to do (if i'm lucky and on the ball). Get up at 6am again tomorrow and do it all again. My fiancee wanted some too. She keeps walking by my office room in her bedwear asking me am I still busy (i.e=come to bed). But at the same time she respects I'm about my money.

Again, people who are successful have traits that people who are not successful do not have.

I would recommend learning a skill. you have to make people want you and not the othe way around. Learn something that brings people to you.

Backbreaker, I agree with you about developing a skill that makes you indispensible (48 laws of power fan?).

What advice would you give to a young guy just out of college who does not know what he wants to do? It seems like there are a million opportunities out there, but it is almost impossible for me to find something I like and not feel like I am missing out on something else that I may like more.
