How difficult is accounting? I'm thinking about going back to college and obtaining a second degree (something useful.) Unfortunately, it will take another 2 years to complete (64hrs.)

I'm currently an accounting student. I wouldn't say that the subject is hard in terms of math (it only requires at most basic algebra), it's hard because you have to remember a ton of different rules and you have to be very precise-- no room for mistakes, unfortunately there's too many oportunities to make silly mistakes.

If you're thinking about going back to school to pursue a second degree in accounting I say go for it. Having a degree in accounting makes you very marketable to potential employers because every company out there must keep track of their finances.

Self-Mastery I hate to get of subject...But I read your 300 FR thread about a week ago and it really inspired me... Are you still with that same girl?

I plan on doing a 100 approach journal this summer once I get home from college and have time.

I am an accountancy major. The job market is so plentiful, and the field so lucrative, I don`t understand why more people aren`t doing it. It is essential to understanding not only the language of business (through financial statements), but also how a business runs, operates, and lives.

I am still a 2nd year, so it is still easy, but the flying dutchman in correct in that there is not much math (except very basic algebra) involved. There are some simple formulas like operating leverage, contribution margin ratio, working capital, etc, but it's all easy stuff, and accountants use tables for things like present value of annuities (useful in investing decisions) or future value of a single amount (for calculating bonds or CDs), which pretty much anyone would use in figuring out how much return they would get from putting 5,000 into a bank at a 3% annual interest rate for a year. Pretty much the hardest part of accounting is making decisions... that's all accounting is...

Dont accounting and finance majors have to take calculus?

Yes. At my university, all business majors need to take calculus, regardless of their specialisation. For example, computer information systems majors take it, as well as marketing or management majors. But this math is never used in the job, or in any other class. So yeh, calculus sucks, but you have to take it.

Only the IT jobs are being outsourced from what I gather. Accounting is one of those fields where you have to be able to establish some sort of communication with your clients (that is if you work for a public accounting firm) or you have to be able to relay that information to your collegues (internal accounting), it doesn't make much sense to outsource the accounting department all the way to India (where English isn't the primary language) because of the communication complications. Also, in accounting you have to constantly be aware of new rules popping up from FASB, and this goes on a lot. I remember I had an accounting book that was obsolete after 1 year because some principals had changed.

Even if you're not interested in majoring in accounting it's still good knowledge. When I was in the Aerospace Engineering department I knew a lot of engineers that were minoring in accounting because they wanted to someday start up their own company and they needed the business savy to do it. I switch outta engineering because I eventually lost passion for it.

Its good pay and you will probably always be able to find a job but on the other hand you will live your life staring at MS Excel spreadsheets, blah!

Guys thanks for your information. I'm going to take the entry level required classes first and see how I do, and also get calculas out of the way. At my school you have to apply to enter the program and take a test or have a certain GPA in your business related classes.

MrStabAHo: I broke up with her about 6 weeks ago. I got tired of being in a relationship with her, but we still 'talk'........

It's odd that I haven't actively sarged in a long time, but women appear to be more available to me. I actually had some freshmen girl I know from class force her number on me, then, some girl tried to 'game' me in the elevator. I've been just studying and lifting weights for the last 4 months; It's paying off!!!!

Before you take accounting...make sure you understand that your market value would be good if you take the CPA exam and pass it. Not an easy task.

Are you willing to take that exam?

I believe that in order to take that exam, you MUST take certain courses in your University. So, don't jump into ANY program without first learning about what the CPA exam is all about.

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.

That's definitely my goal. The university advises ppl who want to sit for the CPA exam to base their curiculum on that goal.

Accounting is the most boring subject there is. It's full of rules and only if you have extreme attention to detail can you actually excel in it. I hated my acct class from day 2 on. But it makes sensse because I like to look at the big picture and little teeny details bore me.

What a drag.

Try Marketing instead

I took Accounting for a couple of years in college. Never finished. It was the most boring thing I've ever done in my entire life. There's no way I could be an accountant.

Marketing majors normally end up working the floor at the gap or selling primerica.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.
