I am what people called "skinny fat." That means I am skinny but I still have some love handles. I was like wise mage and I wanted to lose the love handles.
I can relate to that. When I was skinny with not that much fat around my waist (67kg at 9% bf) my obliques poked out because my my back wasn't that wide proportionatly. (Actually in hind sight they weren't that bad compared to now but I wasn't happy with them at the time).

Now I've got a good V shape but I've still got love handles simply because I'm carrying a 30lb tyre of fat around my waist (I'm now 114kg at about 25% bf). If I lost the 30lb tyre (which I am slowly working on - lost about 15lb in the last 6 month) I think I would finally have my love handle problem beat.

I think the solution is both low body fat and wide back V shape. Just one or the other doesn't work (I know from experience I've tried both but not together). I don't think wise_mage is going to get any where with the V shape thing unless he increases his back size; I think it very unlikely it is too big if he's at 61kg.

If wise mage looked like my pic below then I think he'd have a point (I've certainly got a problem with love handles but in my case it is just 30lb of fat that needs to be lost by plain old self discipline).

edited to change link - if it doesn't work don't worry your not missing much just a picture of a fat guys back with a great V shape (down to my waist) but which is then completely ruined by massive love handles bulging out.
