This normally happens during the fourth set when the weight starts to get heavy. After about three reps, i always have to pause for awhile and re grip the olympic bar.

Is this normal? Should i do anything to improve my grip (ie forearm exercises)?

yeh, it's normal. I had that problem as well.

Try using chalk as long as you can. Then switch to straps when u get to the last few work sets.

Deadlift is primary a back exercise. Train grip another time if that is your concern.

Have you tried a mixed grip?

Chalk is much better than gloves. gloves make the bar thicker and thus harder to grip.

Since you already use a mix-grip, you could try training overhand-grip deadlifts simply as a way to improve grip. Farmer's walks are good too.

For your heaviest sets, Id advise using weight lifting straps to work your back to the max. Some forearm exercises that will increase your grip strength include, Hammer curls, Reverse Barbell Curls(Palms facing floor), and even Wrist Curls.
