I'll tell you what, if I had to choose between a car and my own place to live I'd readily choose the latter, especially if I were in college for the first time (no matter the expense). I'd gladly be a public transportation riding, Ramen noodle and lunch meat eating, Walmart shopping SOB as long as I had could have my own place to bring a young co-ed after class. Yeah, having a car would be nice to but it kinda defeats the purpose if the only place I could go would be back to my folks place.

I don't know why you kids don't save your money while in high school to buy a beater to drive at college and then pay a little extra for a single in the dorm. If you're lucky enough to have parents that would buy you a new car for graduation, consider suggesting then buying a beater and using the money saved to help supplement your rent or even mortgage payments.

The cost of a new car could actually pay at least for a year's mortgage if not more. Plus, your parents will appreciate you planning for the future; they may even show their gratitude in more ways than one.

Lots of good replies here. However, you are forgetting something. Staying at home with your parents have many advantages. You can finish college and not have to worry about rent/utility/bills AS MUCH. At this stage, your education is most important. Secure that future and the panties will drop. I guarantee you wont regret it.
I'm an old fart (at least in the eyes of members in this forum) but not very long ago students were able to go to school and work to pay for their education and lodging. Nowadays kids don't necessarily have to work and they still can't keep their grades up. There's even a percentage that do who still move home after they graduate because they don't have any of the necessary life skills to get a good job and a place to live. It seems like the older that these kids get, the more excuses they seem to make to justify their mooching ways all because they never learned how to be self sufficient.

Well, thats an entirely different topic there gramps. hehe. What you have stated above is absolutely the fault of the parents, who never taught their kids responsibility. I work full time (40 hours/week) in order to pay for tutition and everyday expenses, and i wish my parents were well off enough so that i didnt have to. But dont play the violin just yet, because of this i've grown to appreciate the things i have and actually strive to get somewhere in life. And you know what, 8 months from now when i graduate, its gonna be all worth it.

Back on topic, I dont mean stay with your parents to mooch off them. Use them as a leverage, as a stepping stool to get yourself into financial security. Sure its nice to take a "co-ed" home and have your fun but what do you have when they leave the next day?? Your dried, flakey **** and a cabinet full of ramen noodles?? Get real man, if you just focus your 4 years in college and become somebody, you'll graduate at 22-23 and have a future of quality chicks lining up to you. I work with older people and the one thing they most regret is that they did not give college a chance. I just hate it when a person who has a perfect opportunity to go to college but passes it on because of *****. Flame on. And also, look at them dam foreigners, they come here to the states with penies in their pockets and nothing on their backs but still manage to rise to the top. Focus ladies, focus.
