If you can go backpacking around Europe (or anywhere for that matter), do it! If you can get a job in another country, do it! My original plan was to quit my job and travel, but I ended up getting a job overseas instead.
Living and working in another country is an experience of a lifetime, and quite different than travelling through a place for a few days. I'm really happy I was able to continue my career and continue making an income now.
So I think I know how you're feeling, because I felt the same way, but if you have a good career going, be careful about messing it up.
The trouble really is that the culture in the U.S. isn't as open about taking a year off to travel before heading to college, and then once you've gone through college and you've got that job, you realize that you want to experience and see the rest of the world, but you feel stuck in your career.
