I'm going to be getting my own place which is going to make me have to watch my $$$ spending.

For everyone that lives on their own... I'm curious as to what you eat and how much you spend on food?

I'm used to eating out all the time but now I'll have to obviously make my own things or eat cheap. I'd like to be able to buy food that is healthy but filling. Here's pretty much all I have in my mind thus far.

1.) Pasta, either mac and cheese or with sauce
2.) Tunafish
3.) peanut butter and jelly
4.) dollar menu fast food items
5.) Microwave pizza
6.) Cold cuts

Anyone that lives on their own and can share what they generally buy per week and what they eat would be helpful.

Hope you're working out regularly Kid, the cheap stuff that you're buying is notorious for adding to your gut. Best bet is to learn how to cood real food like soups and stews and an occasional frozen pizza if you don't want to lard out while trying to save a buck.

Yeah I know what you mean. falcon's diet sounds like what I'd be doing but it sounds like its almost all pasta..... I think for health reasons I'd need to mix in something else....

Thats what im worried bout...

you could go look on some of those kraft foods websites for some cheap home cooked stuff.
they probably aren't the best choices in the world compared to someone else's organic diet, but they aren't as horrible compared to fast food either.

they are fast and cheap and taste good and you get more food for your money.

Why is it so hard?

-eggs
-chicken
-ground beef
-occasional salmon or steak
-oats
-brown rice
-potatoes
-green peppers
-brocolli
-asparagus
-tomatoes
-apples
-almonds(sometimes expensive)

I suppose if you're a skinny kid you could get away with eating garbage like what falcon recommends, but for someone like me who puts on weight if I eat crap, this list is good. I live on my own and spend about $70 a week on food. The only sacrafice I have to make is less alcohol :) I understand that we all have different financial situations, but it really comes down to how much value you put on your health... Believe me, even if your weight doesn't change eating garbage, your health will.
cheers

y'know, I really, really love bread. My parents seem to think of it as a side dish but I like to fill up on it, and it's cheap too.

I have to agree with Quik. Chicken breasts, ground beef, eggs, pasta, various sauces and cheese, and frozen vegetables is what mainly eat. I can make different meals with the chicken and beef or eggs and I can get by for about $20 a week.

I stick to drinking water plus the occasional night of alcohol. If you need a cheap flavored drink make some tea, lemonade or Kool aid but beware of all that sugar

In hell. I'm Satan's lover.
I agree with the mods lol. Also learn to make chili. That helped me back when I was living in dorms and couldn't afford an appartment
(let alone food !) You can dump almost anything in it too. Oh and brown rice is essential.

Deffinetly cut out the Ramen noodles. The sodium level is outrageous. Quiksilver pretty much has it down. I'd add the Michellina's Lean Gourmets to the list as well. They're healthy-ish and cost under a dollar.

You can also freeze that chili if you don't want to eat it all up in a day or two and/or get some hot dogs and make chili dogs

Good stuff everyone... I'll definitely add chicken breasts, ground beef, brown rice and veggies to the list. I don't really know how to cook real well... will the George Foreman grill work on these?

Also Chef Boyardee cans are a $1 each right now at Wal-Mart with the generic brands being even cheaper.... Is there a harm in consuming these items?

My only problem with this and the michelina is that it doesn't seem to fill me up. I'm sort of a big eater...

In the scheme of things its better than eating at McDonalds, but you should still be careful when buying packaged or canned items. Check the nutrients label and make sure you aren't killing yourself when eating that item. Also, be on the look out for things with High Fructose Corn Syrup.

I have lived for months on nothing but peanut butter and honey sandwiches, and didn't really want anything else.

The best values on produce will be at your local farmer's market. It is also the highest quality produce as well.

I never had peanut butter and honey.... must be a midwest thing but I'd give it a shot. Tuna, eggs, and chicken sound good.

I see oats mentioned a bunch of times... aren't they just like nuts??? Do you all just eat those plain? Cottage cheese is a good idea!
