Some great insight:

News people don't leave the office any more to get news. So what they report as "news" is little more than water cooler gossip in the newsroom. And what they do report has to be sensation and attract eyeballs, so they can sell them to the advertisers. A news program with poor ratings but good reporting will not stay on the air longer.

And this is the fundamental problem with the idiot media. They are selling entertainment, not news or facts. And in fact, the news departments are considered subordinate to the entertainment divisions of the networks. In other words, it is entertainment, not news, by definition.

Much ado was made of Fox News obtaining trademark protection on the phrase "Fair and Balanced". But the joke really was that in the description of "goods and services" accompanying that application, they listed "Entertainment, in the form of News Reporting" or some such. Entertainment. Think about that for a second.

You are basing your factual interpretation of the world on what the purveyors even admit is just Entertainment.

And you have the balls to look down your nose at others as being "uninformed" because they don't watch 4.6 hours of that drivel a day.

Television is not factual. It is not educational - even Sesame Street, which just teaches rote memorization and self-esteem, not critical thinking.

And maybe right there is the key - critical thinking. Television teaches passivity and victimhood. It teaches depression and consumption. It teaches inaction. You are a spectator, not a participant. You watch, but don't do. You have an opinion, that "counts" - but little more.

They are manipulating us, plain and simple. And when you go to work Monday Morning and sit around the water cooler and say "What about that Donald Trump?", well, you've been manipulated.

Unplug from the idiot media. They have nothing to say to us, other than gossip, rumor-mongering and celebrity news. They want us to be star-struck idiots, willing to do whatever they say. And they don't want us to think for ourselves.

You can't watch this drivel and be happy, self-motivated, wealthy, productive, or even healthy.

Escape from the dull hammering of media hypnosis: its sensation pounding, thought infecting, piss fountain of bs; popularity slutting, social status spitting horse ****, and reclaim your standards of mental stimulation.

Great literature does not have to be saved for the adults. We need to apply a new pedagogy in this society, by reinforcing young minds to again find temptation in stimulation through literature and art, to reward and build enthusiasm for constructive, eager learning rather than a passive attitude towards it. We are suffocated by so many sources that are draining our ability to think for ourselves and claim our own creative authority.

Spot on Danger and Night-hawk

The media today is like a dramatic attention wh0re.. turning bullsh!t into "news". Well, the price of gas has shot up in recent weeks (Imagine that! Never happened before in my lifetime!) so they send out a reporter to talk to a gas station attendant on how to "Save on gas".

Her tips? Put air in your tires. "We'll use this device to check the air pressure" she says. Device? You mean a 99-cent tire gauge? No mention of where and how to find out what is the proper pressure for the front and rear of your car. The next tip? Drive more slowly, but "no one does that anyway, tee-hee, giggle-giggle!" Oh girls are just so dumb! Ha-ha!

Why is this NEWS?

We've been through one gas "crises" after another, since the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973. And yea, every time since, when gas goes up ten cents a gallon, some klown on a TV station goes out and stands in front of a gas station and tells us to put air in our tires.

Check. Got it. Back in '85, '98, '05 and now 2013.

People who follow the idiot media, be it network, cable, or even the BBC or PBS, end up being less informed than someone who reads - even blog articles. If you wait a few days, or even overnight, for a story to die down, the reality of a story sinks in, while the hoopla, speculation, and utter trash, often ends up discarded.

Well put and well worded playher! My question is when did things really start to get twisted by the media and other groups? Hell, I talk with 60 year olds who don't even know alternative facts on WWII.

The only "news" source (that I consider news) I read regularly, is Investors Business Daily. Even that needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Sure, I read other "news' sources, but I think of them as purely editorials, even the pieces that are labeled as news.

I can't imagine going through life and thinking that those self congratulatory "talking heads" are actually giving out useful, truthful, unbiased information.

This is a great thread. The news has become extremely obnoxious, stupid, and filled with things that aren't news.

I would say the most obnoxious network right now is CNN, but they are all bad.

It's entirely geared towards women and it's just become incredibly mind-numbingly stupid. I've been getting my news off the internet for about a year and it's much better- when something noteworthy happens, you can read 5 or 6 different versions of it and try to piece together all the pertinent details.

the financial news always cracks me up...well it would if it wasnt all such desperation and lies, 'the truth' re the financial world is that very very few people know what is going to happen in the future, all the market 'experts' are at best, informed guessers.

Damn straight.

Only a sucker would get their financial advice from TV or the mass media. Come on man! If their financial advice was any good, they'd shut up and invest according to it and make money.. and not tell YOU. You never sell the goose that lays the golden eggs. But regular geese that you can pass off as laying golden eggs... they are for sale all the time (cough, cough, FACEBOOK, cough....)

i've never even owned a tv and I am 60. I've lived with a couple of women who had tv's, but about all I ever watched was law and order (mostly svu) and history or discovery. I do like to watch the Walkling Dead, and fox news is a LOT closer to being sensible and realistic than any other network, for a FACT, Jack.

Fox goes out of its way to cover the opposite of whatever the other networks are doing. IT is hardly fair and balanced, but you need to read their articles sometimes to get the complete picture.

that's why news reporters on tv call them "stories" because the $hit is made up.

Just to toss-in a quote:

“When you’re young, you look at television and think, There’s a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that’s not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want. That’s a far more depressing thought. Conspiracy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It’s the truth.”

Fixed.

" News" now is a laugh, what more needs to be said about that than what we all already know, as for everything else ? I'm skeptical believing men really want to watch the overly dramatic goings on of feminized orange guidos or the sassy and "empowered" lawyer chicks zany lost in love lifestyle, the tepid rapid fire "humour" of inept nerds, the androgynous dyke's dance moves, the fat black goldfish's latest book club offerings or even the feminist snuff fantasy of a sensitive serial killer. The list goes on.

Men are just the boiled frog experiment writ large, we don't know any better any more.

I should give you rep for any post you put, shame I cant already.

I was saying exactly like that in the everything else forum, apparently any goodamn tv series after a certain point move toward to the women, I realize they spend most of the money and the producers are looking for fat checks from advertisment companies but for fvck sake you cannot create a show about a gang of outlaw bikers only to turn into a soap opera...damn criminals which do dont crimes, even the sopranos or the shield sometime were so bloody boring that you really asks what is the sense behind that.

And of course all reality shows are women stuff, cooks which cook near a camera, then the guido apocalipse with jersey shore which grab the heritage from the the big brother and so on, survival realities on islands, thats the wet dream of every woman to have a camera chasing them while they do the most senseless and insignificant things.

You know when we were kids we wanted to be like hulk hogan and throw away bad guys then we grew up and realized its not like that, women instead keep thinking like kids till they die.
