@snorida:
When you listen to music, you identify with it to some degree.

I dont go to a woman and say: Hey baby, since I listen to Jay-z and Kanye, I think you should like me and go out with me.

It's about the beliefs, attitudes and messages in their music.

If you doubt that this is true I suggest you do some research about how you develop beliefs and thinking styles etc. It'll be worth the research.

Dude, there is a lot more to rap than killing people. You shouldn't be so full of prejudice. There a lot of good rappers out there with good messages.
Especially Gangstarr, Kanye, Common.

Gangstarr:
Wether you kids be holdin, on the block all day
Or you be puffing lye, out in the back hallway
Or whether you being schooled, or in the library
Wherever you are Baby Pah, realize that your essence
is divine son, and let it shine son
As we refine son, aiyyo, this ****'ll blow your mind son
We're royalty
If you can't hear what they're saying you should listen to a song more than once.

Eminem has some very good music too, but I dislike his celeb attitude.
For instance, when he couldn't take a joke with Triumph, The Insult Comic Dog at the MTV Awards (and got booed at afterwards  )

Dilated peoples are good too. Forgot them in the opening post.

Ain't no other woman that could take your spot my..

If I wrote you a symphony
Just to say how much you mean to me (what would you do)
If I told you, you were beautiful
Would you date me on the regular (tell me would you?)
Well baby, I've been around the world
But I ain't seen myself another girl (like you)

This ring here represents my heart
But there's just one thing I need from you (say I do)

[Bridge:]
Because, I can see us holding hands
Walking on the beach our toes in the sand
I can see us on the country side
Sitting on the grass laying side by side
You can be my baby
Let me make you my lady
Girl you amaze me
Aint gotta do nothin crazy
See all I want you to do is be…

[Chorus x2]
My love (so don't give away)
My love (so don't give away)
My love (so don't give away)
Ain't another woman that could take your spot my love

[TI:]
aIright it’s time to get it JT
I don’t know what she hesitating for man
(Aye aye) Shorty, cool as a fan
On the new once again
(Baby) Still has fans from Peru to Japan
Listen baby, I don't wanna ruin your plan
But if you got a man, try to lose him if you can
Cause the girls real wild throw they hands up high
when they wanna come and kick it wit a stand up guy
you don't really wanna let the chance go by
Cause you ain't been seen wit a man so fly
(baby) France so fly I can go fly
Private, cause I handle my B-I
They call me candle guy, simply because I am on fire
I hate to have to cancel my vacation so you can't deny
I'm patient, but I ain't gonna try
You don't come, I ain't gonna die
Hold up, what you mean, you can't go why?
Me and you boyfriend we ain't no tie
You say you wanna kick it, when i aint so high
Well baby, its obvious that I ain't your guy
I ain't goin lie, I feel your space
But forget your face, I swear I will
St. Barths, Anguilla, anywhere I chill
Just bring wit me a pair, I will

tru. i love TI's verse. listen to him.

Allright man, I just don't try and get messages out of songs
Why are you listening to music then?
The artist is expressing his message in his music, if you don't/can't see that than you're not listening to music, you're just hearing it.
Off course the sounds (instruments, beats etc) are important too in a song but the focus is on what the vibe and message of a song is.

Kanye's music is decent. His character is not.

It's funny how every single one of these 'debates' about rap music follow the exact same formula:

1. Someone makes some sort of statement about rap music
2. Anti-rap people fire up their Stereotype Machine and start generalising about the genre
3. Defenders of rap start mentioning the artistic merit of certain rap music
4. More anti-rap people, ignoring all the previous threads, continue the stereotypes
5. More defenders of rap again re-state the merits which can be found in rap music
6. Music appreciators make general statements about finding merit in all genres of music
7. Some people agree with the Music appreciators
8. More anti-rap people stereotype again
9. More defenders of rap state the merits of rap music again
10. Go back to step 2 and start over

I'll go ahead and say it...rap is art, or rather...hip-hop is art.

And T.I. is the biggest DJ in the rap game. Check out "Why You Wanna" and listen to the lyrics...

It's like he took the pook/senor fingers/gunwitch and rolled them up into rap verses...

I like Hip Hop/Rap alot but I REALLY LOVE old school R&B/Blues/Soul Al Greene, Marvin Gaye, B.B. King, some of that...but back to the rap why the F*CK do they need a message in the songs. The point is to entertain and sell albums to get more money, no one listens to too much message sh't but Pac because for some reason he is different. and EMINEM....EMINEM...that is the most cussin rapper there is and when it comes to how he talks about women... listen to his songs dissin Kim.

I see it like this...

Nowadays you are pumping music into your subconscious. When you are working out with the ipod, driving the car with your cdplayer on, woken up by your favorite radio station on your clock alarm, programming your ringtones...it's all music that you are taking in, whether you are paying attention to it or not.

The problem arises when the music you are taking in is negative. If you are listening to love songs 24 hrs a day then dont be suprised when you become an overly emotional guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. On the other side of the spectrum, if you are listenin to eazy e talking about b!tches or slick rick tellin you to "treat her like a prostitute" dont be suprised if women become objects and not human beings in your head.

The point is try to find a happy music with the music you listen to. It is suprising how much music is all about love and jealousy. I got on a House/Electro tip and most of it has the same meanings over and over.

P.S. That "call me the candle guy cuz Im on fire" line by T.I. is the WACKEST sh!t i heard in a minute, smh

Me too. That's exactly what I'm aiming at with this thread.
That's why I think Gangstarr is so good.
If a woman is worthy, treats him right and earned his respect, he says, treat her with respect.

And all the girls they want to spoil me
My honey annoits me with oils G
After work she greets me, and treats me like royalty
Works with me, giving herself, by my side
She don't sweat me for loot, my fame, or my ride
A lot of ladies out there, be lookin lovely
But they don't got no control of the their life, inside they're ugly
Listen yo, the best way, it ain't always the fast way
And yes the best way, it ain't always to act nasty
I'll open up the door always before you pass me
Baby Doll, because you're royalty

True.
If you decide not to open yourself up to the messages in your concious mind it won't matter. Your subconcious mind will do so automaticly, always. And since your subconcious is responsible for 96-98 % of your beliefs and behaviour you might want to check on what you allow into it. ;)

Hip hop is my easy listening soundtrack, the simple melodies and catchy beats are good for the background. Eventually, I pick up the lyrics and yes, most of the time the rhymes are motivating and stimulating.

But there are plenty of bad hip hop tracks; ones which are repetitive and conjure up really blatant images of sex and violence and ones which sound like nursery rhymes! Seriously, the simplest tunes, Made by producers who know their market!

I like hip-hop but most of the rnb/rap in the charts can be irritating.

In hell. I'm Satan's lover.
This is a little silly, changing your music tastes and interests so suddenly. I agree to the point where you shouldn't listen to depressing or emo music but rock and most other music genre's can give you similar (and even superior) beliefs. Most of the music I own reflects the game. I have to say however; Tupac's the man.

Techno is good too. It's fairly neutral since most Techno music that has lyrics makes no sense.

The past 8 years of hip hop has been a slump fest. I hear nothing but mediocre talent( T.I., 50 cent) to just plain kill yourself( K-Fed). Hip hop died with Pac and Biggie.
