So I don't know about you guys, but I come under a lot of heat from friends and family about lifting. It's practically hell where I train. I get questioned and critized on my goals allllll the time...I get tons of questions like this:

"Why do you want to do this? I don't understand!"
"What's the point of getting strong?"
"Why are you eating so many eggs in a day?!"
"Why are you drinking olive oil?"
"What's with these haha protein shakes?"

I get accused of having massive self esteem problems when I carry a very fun relationship with a very pretty girl. Which to me should show that I have good self esteem.

When I give nutritional advice when asked, I get resentful comments and I am told I don't know what I'm talking about. I don't understand why people have to combat me when they ask me for advice. :cuss:

If there is one thing I've learned, it's too keep my mouth shut about lifting/eating around family and friends. But whenever I'm around thats all they want to talk about! I can't tell if it's jealousy or they think I'm self-absorbed.

Anyone else have these problems? Or am I alone in this lifting universe where everyone thinks I'm crazy? I sure hope not

Its jealousy.

Which is a common occurence when you are doing awesome in life.

People have to try and break you down because you represent accomplishment while they represent complacency.

They know this and cannot stand to be made aware of their own failures which your success makes them think of.

"What's the point of getting strong?" What's the point on laying on your bum all day and being fat?
"Why are you eating so many eggs in a day?!" Why are you eating fast food all day long?
"Why are you drinking olive oil?" Why are you drinking milkshakes?
"What's with these haha protein shakes?" They help me get the required amount of protein each day
If they continue to annoy you about it, confront them about it. You can say something like: 'Hey, if you won't encourage me, then shut the f*ck up'. I had something else in mind too, but I forgot

If that doesn't work, ignore them. Every single sentence they say. Ignore them. They'll get the message. I hope... :nervous:

90% of people are jealous or envious or just negative.

I hear ya man... it's the same way with me even though I haven't even been working out for 2 months. My parents HATE my training, they actually resent me for doing it. They try to tell me it's unhealthy to eat so much, workout 3x per week, etc when they couldn't care less about their own health. They didn't care about my nutrition when I ate fast food all day but now this new healthy diet is suddenly going to kill me.

My friends ask me if I've been working out, and when I say yes, they ask me to explain and then tell me I'm doing everything wrong once I talk about it. They're all the same though - they've either never set foot in a gym in their lives, or they've been doing bicep curls ever since they hit puberty and are still skinny.

Now when people ask me if I've been working out, I just say yes and change the subject because I hate talking about it. The only people who don't try to bring me down are those who train seriously, they respect what I'm doing.

It must be a lot worse for you as you've seen huge results and I only started recently.

I believe it's envy then again maybe the correct word is jealousy..

My problem is this, since last year I have put on 25lbs it's not all muscle but dam much of it is... I am 6-2 230lbs but does anyone in my family except for my near old Mom notice whose always been the most honest and blunt person alive where she use to tell me she wished my thighs were bigger but now notices that my thighs, calfs and chest, arms are bigger but my two older brothers and nephew and nieces never seem to notice the change nor do they comment... not that I am looking for it but for God sake you'd think family would be more supportive of someone wanting to get healthy.

For example my neighbor is in the yard one day he has started lifting he's the same age as me 49 and my nephew goes dam whats he been doing? I say what? His arms are big and I am looking at his big 12 inch arms in comparsion to my now 15 1/2 you have to believe there is something up with that ...

Heres another example my brother needed to borrow my Snapper rider lawn mower it's a 12 horse 28 inch cut I looked up a 17 horse 33 inch cut and find out they weigh 375lbs so I figure mine is around 350lb... he doesn't have any ramps to roll it on his truck so we man handle it or I should say I did he has his step son whose a big guy who looks strong but is weak and my brother has a hernia hanging out his belly. Now out of concern for him I tell him I'll take the back where the heaviest part is where the engine is and you just guide it in once I deadlift it up to the height of the truck bed so they lift the front up the lighest part to the bed and I deadlift the mower up to the level with the bed and roll it in at the time I didn't know how much it weigh but I'll tell ya it was heavy son of a gun and powerliting for functional strength has paid off.

Do I hear dam bro your getting strong from either one of them? No, I get nothing while I am more or less patting myself on the back saying this is the reason I lift to prevent injury still no comment from my brother with his hernia hanging out his belly and I even lift the mower out of the truck when he was through.

Don't worry about it I-tallionStallion keep pushing on it's obvious it's jealousy let it be motivation for your workouts some day they'll need someone strong.

Like everyone else has said, they're jealous. They envy that you have the drive and ambition to change yourself and make yourself better physically and mentally. They hate on you for the same reasons that you used to hate on DJs when you were an AFC, because they seem to be doing better than you are.

I get the same kinda comments too, mostly from my mom though, although i don't think its out of jealousy but her just looking out for me.

The thing that really pisses me off about her though is that you'd think she was Charles Poliquin with thesuperior knowledge of diet and strength training she possess.

I had been feeling quite tired and sluggish when i first started working out, and had been getting DOMS which is pretty normal, although in her mind i was doing everything completely wrong. I then took her to the gym with me and asked one of the instructors to check my form, which he said was all fine, but my mum kept telling me that my legs are to far apart on rows and i stick my ass out whilst doing deadlifts, how else am i meant to do them?!

She also says that i should me doing cardio and aerobics in order to stay healthy, when i tell her im tryig to gain weight she just ignores it and thinks she's right.

I dont even want to get into her amazing knowledge of diet and the right things i should be eating.

All this, coming from a woman who is well overweight, does 0 exercise and who i have to help up when she reaches down in the bottom shelf to get something.

thats causing jealousy problems

nobody has ever questioned my workout habits and i work out 7 days a week

hell , would be ridicolous if someone made fun of my workout habits, I'd be like, well would you like it more if I was sitting my fat ass on the tv like you?

would you like it more if I ate more junk food like you?

well nobody ever made fun of my workout so that doesn't ever come out, so its probably more you then them.

you probably telling them how to eat, or whatever or they should be working out or whatever

I think I figured out how to stop the criticism, I'll have to try it next time someone asks me if I work out.

What I do now...
Friend: Have you been working out?
Me: Yeah
Friend: What do you do at the gym?
Me: Deadlifts, squats, compound exercises, 3 day split, etc...
Friend: F*ck man you got it all wrong, you have to do like 20 sets of bicep curls every day. No wonder you aren't huge. And what's with only working out 3 days a week, you must be softer than mashed potatoes...
Me: uhh yeah ok so did you see the game last night?

What I should do...
Friend: Have you been working out?
Me: Yeah
Friend: What do you do at the gym?
Me: 20 sets of bicep curls a day, 7 days a week.
Friend: Wow that's what I do too!:D So that will make me big and strong?
Me: Hell yeah:D
Friend: Nice! Good to know, I love you man!

BTW one of my buddies did actually tell me I was "softer than mashed potatoes" when I told him I work out 3 days a week. He was just joking of course but I thought it was funny. This was before I got a job and switched to 2 days a week, I can only imagine what he'd say now.

I'll see your ROFL and raise you one.. funny stuff Jahidi :)

Looks like the reason has pretty much been covered here (jealousy envy.. etc). Just make sure you don't let someone elses insecurities bring you down (and if it gets bad.. avoid those people if you can). Your doing great bro, keep it up!

Yeah my family give me a lot of **** for eating lots of chicken, tuna, ground beef, eggs etc. Some of my family members are actually convinced I'll drop dead before 30 for drinking 12 raw eggs everyday. My diet is not a 'healthy diet' according to them, ok..

My friends are alright with it, they even comment how it looks like I've been working out a lot and how they can see my pecs through my t-shirt, lol ;)

Thanks guys...well its only with a few friends. Some compliment me but love to tell me how to do it better haha...they love repeating junk they heard on tv.

Most of the problem stems with my mom who thinks she is Queen Atkins...let me note she's had no success on it cause she has no real drive...but loves reading the books and buying the bars and disgusting shakes...ugh. Strength training is a waste of time to her. Everytime i make a shake, its jokes galore.

My 15 year old brother who is doing the same training/similar diet is having amazing results! He gets a lot of attention in my family and no negative feedback haha. He supports me 100%, which helps a lot. He'll be in the gym saying "C'mon Stallion...lift that $hit!!" Funny stuff.

You guys make good points, thanks I'll keep it all in mind. Lately they have been quiet about it.

You guys are always supportive heh...thanks very much! I appreciate the compliments. Hopefully we all work hard and get to were we want :)
