HALIFAX — It was like a galling new version of the ancient American comic strip that ran in some Sunday newspapers in the 1900s, but whose punchline gag endures — the strip’s two awkward Frenchmen frozen in an excess of politesse.

“After you, Alphonse.”

“No, you first, my dear Gaston.”

And this was how the notorious picture of Rehtaeh Parsons — naked from the waist down, hanging out a window after she’d thrown up, unaware that the half-naked boy behind her was looking over his shoulder to a camera and giving a thumbs up — came to be taken.

According to the boy, after Rehtaeh had collected herself and purportedly invited them to pick up where they’d left off, he and his friend did an Alphonse-and-Gaston as they bickered about who would go next with the then-15-year-old.

The boy was then just 16 himself. He pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography last month and was sentenced Thursday to a year’s probation, with orders to get counselling and stay away from alcohol. The other boy earlier pleaded guilty to production of child pornography and was given a conditional discharge, with a year’s probation.

Their identities are protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Rehtaeh’s name is allowed to be published only because her parents, Glen Canning and Leah Parsons, fought to have it exempted from a publication ban that prohibits the identification of victims in child pornography.

In an exclusive interview this week with Postmedia News, the boy in the picture, along with his parents, sat down to talk for the first time about what happened that night. The boy says he and the other boy and Rehtaeh were having consensual sex when “you could tell she was getting ready to get sick, so we hopped up, I opened the window and said ‘You can get sick here,’ so she said ‘OK,’ and got sick out the window.”

Rehtaeh went to the bathroom, and when she returned, the boy said, “We had a smoke out the window.

“We were like laughing and stuff, we were behind her, like giggling and stuff because she had her shirt on and no pants and she was just like hanging out the window.

“We were kind of laughing about the night, she was like, ‘You guys can keep going,’ and me and (the other boy), we’re like pointing at each other.

“Like, ‘You go ahead’ and he said ‘You go ahead,’ so I was like whatever, I go on (Rehtaeh). I just posed for the picture and he took his cellphone out and took it.”

The power of that single image was described by Nova Scotia provincial court Judge Gregory Lenehan Thursday as “the domino” that “started the cascading events that led to her death” about 17 months after the picture was snapped.

Now just-turned 20, the boy had sent the picture, on two different occasions about two weeks apart, to two friends, both of them girls.

It is but one of the contradictions of the case that the recipients of the picture, who passed it on to others at Cole Harbour District High School, who passed it on to still more, were themselves female.

Another of the contradictions is that the boy Judge Lenehan said had “lit the wildfire, so to speak” is such a slight young man, bright, well-spoken and even capable, albeit in that awkward-bordering-on-ghastly way of the young man, of being thoughtful.

At Cole Harbour High, in Grade 11, he was on the football team and by his own shy admission, a “pretty popular” kid.

He is also brave.

He read a statement in court at the end of his sentencing, apologizing to Rehtaeh’s family and his own and admitting he’d made “a huge mistake.”

“I will not live with the guilt of someone passing away, but I will live with the guilt of sending the picture.”

And he reminded the packed courtroom, “I have pled guilty to distributing child pornography, not a sexual assault” and said “I never played a part in the bullying (of Rehtaeh), nor would I.”

That was a courageous challenge to the public narrative that has taken root here and far beyond Nova Scotia.

***

On April 4, 2013, after a quarrel with her boyfriend, an upset Rehtaeh returned home and attempted to hang herself in the bathroom. She suffered brain damage and was removed from life support three days later.

Her mother took to Facebook, telling the world, “Rehtaeh is gone today because of the four boys that thought raping a 15-year-old girl was OK and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun.”

There were never four boys involved, and as a friend of Rehtaeh’s who was at the house that night told police and as Rehtaeh’s own messages suggested, there may never have been a sexual assault. There certainly wasn’t a reasonable prospect of conviction.

According to the boy, the night before, he, the other boy and Rehtaeh’s friend were drinking, and they “kind of got into it, and we did some things.”

(“Did some things” is the boy’s code for sex, at least in telling his story in front of his parents.)

The next day, Rehtaeh was with that girl and the boys. They were all drinking heavily — straight vodka shots — and at some point, the two boys and Rehtaeh headed to the bedroom.

Police later told the boy they estimated he’d had 11 shots, Rehtaeh eight. He said at no time did he believe she was so drunk she didn’t know what she was doing.

“Obviously, if I felt like if she didn’t want it, it wouldn’t have happened,” he said. “It was all mutual. We were in the groove.”

The next day, when the boy “woke up sober” he checked his phone and found the other boy had sent the picture.

“I thought, ‘OK, that’s what happened last night,’ ” and sent it to the first girl. “I just said, ‘Look what I did last night type of thing,’ ” he said. “Kind of bragging about it, but it was a joke as well.”

On the night of the picture, when Rehtaeh Parsons wouldn’t go home, she slept alone in a spare room.

The boy of the house, said the one in the picture, “didn’t want her sleeping in his bed in case she got sick in there or something.”

There it was again, the bloodless, casual cruelty of the young, same as it ever was, only now, in the modern world, with what the judge called “tragic consequences, the worst ever.”

If parents were doing it, should they be able to "opt out" on their child attending this course?
Of course.

But parents need to make sure there kids have some knowledge of the different children they may meet, and not to mistreat people different from them. Id hope most kids learn these lessons from their folks or from school by the time they reach junior high.

By Grade 3, students will learn about same-sex relationships. Children in Grades 4 and up will learn more about the dangers of online bullying, while the dangers of sexting will come in Grade 7. Lessons about puberty will move from Grade 5 to Grade 4, while masturbation and "gender expression" are mentioned in the Grade 6 curriculum.
"In protecting my children, premier, you do not have my consent to teach my children about masturbation, oral and anal sex, and you do not have my consent to teach them about gender identity theory," she said. "Our message to this government, who wants to manipulate our children into a distorted way of thinking is: Not on our watch."

I now understand your concern. It is not WHAT children learn or WHEN they learn but rather, WHERE they learn. If that's your position, I have no further comments.
No you don't understand. It's about WHO teaches children WHAT, WHERE and WHEN.

By the way, I believe social issues that concern the general public must be taught in schools--whether public or private.
I realized you believe that. What social issues? Liberal social issues?Homosexuality and people confused about their identity should not be a social issue concerning the general public. But even if you think it is and is the place for school administrators to decide what to teach, you still have the question of what they teach and when. You say school should teach social values whether public or private, so it's okay with you if say a Catholic private school teaches that homosexuality is abnormal?

I actually think that's a little late. Mommy-mommy and daddy-daddy relationships and marriages should be treated as normal as early as kindergarten.

People are, of course, free to homeschool their children if they are against this. Personally I don't think raising your children to be asocial unkempt slugs is worth inoculating them against mere mentions of homosexuality but different strokes you know.

Amoka and Jaylan,

So effectively you believe the public school system is responsible for teaching morals (aka social issues, or not to "mistreat people", etc,...)?
You'll get crickets from those 2 clowns, but of course the school should take care of them. They're entitled to it, don't you know?

Protecting your children from the morality borg does not mean your child will be an asocial unkempt slug.

It merely means that you can choose what values you instill into your child and that the morality and value teachings have no place in public schooling.
In theory yes.

But in practice most kids who are homeschooled by parents who wish to instill their own morals and values are hooked on the needle or the black penis by the age of 19. Burrowing and hiding them away simply doesn't work.

Some, yes.

Because not all parents teach their kids how to properly interact with others. Some parents even try to instill bigotry, hate, or intolerance into their kids. Ive known such kids whove said that being in school around different kinds of people showed them how wrong their parents were.

Some "values" are not meant for modern American society.

Lastly, homeschool kids are generally not as well socialized as non-homeschooled kids are. If anything, Id recommend sending your kid to a good private school and stay mindful of the curriculum being taught. That said, homeschoolers likely see everyone as just as weid and odd as everyone else sees them. But it cannot be denied that having a largely different socialization experience from 94 to 97% of the population, will produce many children who may not exactly "fit in" as easily as expected.

A sheltered life produces very unique people. Im dating someone now who despite going to public school, lived a very sheltered life thanks to her parents rules and the area she was raised in. Thus her view of people and the world can be very naive and inexperienced at times.

There is a middle ground. I am considering home-schooling my kids but I definitely agree that you have to live in reality. Things are what they are, so you have to teach your kids good morals and value AND allow them to live in reality.

It's not that anybody is intolerant, it's that nobody wants to learn about men f*cking each other. That's not intolerance.

The main people teaching hate are single black parents. Remember that.

By the way, list some of the 'values' that aren't meant for modern American society (because you said so, I guess).

Or learn about how males are the oppressor of females, whites are all privileged and oppress everyone non-white, heterosexuals oppress homos, etc. They don't teach tolerance, they teach intolerance of males, heteros, and whites, and place females, non-whites, gays etc on a pedestal.

If it were about just not mistreating others like Jaylan claims, that's a lesson that is at least 2000 years old and common sense.

Agree on that, anytime I hear "tolerance", "equality" or "social justice" I have something beeping in my reptilian brain screaming danger.

It all boils down to males= oppressors to take revenge, whites=racists therefore to enforce laws to stop them, straight=bigots, wealthy=robbers

I can imagine in school "you father should do more to help victims because its due to thim that they suffer, he should give more money via taxes, expect less from his employee and help your mother in house chores..you dont want to be like him, you wanna be a real man so show it and do as we say".

It all boils down, for the minorites/females, to getting monetary advantages. They play to emotion. I should just say blacks and females. I don't see many Hispanics or Asians out there taking that many handouts.

And who's out there behind the curtain the whole time? Rich white sh*t-libs.

Home-schooling is great, I did it for a year after failing grade 8 and it was one of the best times that I can recall.
There is no preferential treatment for 'certain groups of kids' at home. You can trust your teachers because they are your mom and dad or tutors your parents have hired.. I had a lot of time to myself and after playing some video games I would read through chemistry textbooks, finance, math, anything I could find in our library. In fact some days I would just pull random books from the shelves and read them. I learned about Robotics, Gardening, Speed Reading, Different types of Math, Biology, Chemistry. By the time I got to high school, I was extremely interested in attending university. By the time I left high school, I never wanted to go to school again. If my parents had kept me out of school, I would be a lot further along than I am today... I imagine I probably would have been working for lockheed martin or texas instruments right now. If I have the resources, I would absolutely prefer to home school... my mother stuck me into martial arts for that entire year so I would get physical education and during that time I took 3 different martial arts.

Seriously, fvck regular school.. I'm a teacher now and I can tell you that schools are nothing but MASSIVE baby sitting camps for your children to do busy work. If you choose to home school, bring your kids to a local library and have them read one or two books per day, then give them the free time to pursue what interests them. I read a bunch of books on programming and then started using turbo pascal in my spare time.. also read a bunch of stuff on drawing and would spend free time doodling cartoon characters. Don't be intimidated by teaching... Let me break down my job for you; I stand in front of a class, review a language point before class and then tell the class about it. That's it. Sometimes I quickly check homework but the job isn't intensive and you can easily do it in your spare time.

Through home-schooling your kids will be a lot further along then the rest of their friends. If you need your kids to learn social skills, put them in a dance class or get them to open a small business.

And if one of the curriculum writers is a perv, they need to replace that person.
Why would they want to replace the Perv-in-Chief when the whole purpose of the exercise is to promote perversity to pre-teen kids? 10 year olds being taught how to have anal sex? When I was 10, I was more interested in playing with my action figures than having anal sex. But perhaps you had a more "progressive" upbringing, Gaylan.

Gaylan will not be having any kids, so that's a rhetorical question. On a somewhat related note, I do recall Gaylan posting that his brother is a tranny.

Like I say, Jaylan is most likely a 50-25% mixed black (in other words considered black) lesbian female or possibly male but bisexual or gay. (S)He supports every liberal cause but is extra zealous of the gay cause. (S)He is black, of dubious sexual orientation making Jaylan a two-fer or three-fer. It doesn't get any more privileged status than that under liberal occupied society.
