Derek, I'm not sure what you mean by defensive position since every aspect of BJJ is defensive. Everything the Gracies are doing is defensive. The Gracies are defending themselves by maintaining the dominant position over their opponent at all times. If you wanna see the Gracies work from their backs then you'd have better luck with an instructional video or watching UFC.

These videos aren't self defense instructionals. These are just videos of Gracies beating up and humiliating other martial artists.

The Gracies routinely start fights and accept fights with other martial artists. If a martial artist tries to open a school in the Gracies area the Gracies immediately challenge them. The Gracies are the McDojo police. Insulting a Gracie is automatic grounds for a challenge also.

These videos only show the effectiveness of the technique when their opponents are on the ground. It does not show how they would defend themselves if they were in the same position. The goal is to show the effectiveness of the technique by showing it off in real life, no holds barred fights. they keep saying that their school of martial arts will teach you how to effectively defend yourself in a ground fight. But they never show themselves in an actual ground fight where they get caught in a position where they actually have to defend themselves. He keeps talking about defense but none of his videos actually show him in a defensive position.

Also, I found a few of the videos other users posted funny, because in a few of the videos the gracies actually START the fights. Most martial arts chorus's preach against being the one to start the fight, instead only use it when you are in a position where you need to defend yourself.

well dude, thanks to BJJ i can fully defend my self if i ever do end up on the ground.

if im mounted ( me flat on my back and them sitting on me ) , ill , block one side by holding his arm, leg over knee, bridge and escape( into his guard if he knows BJJ too ) or ill bridge, slide a knee up to his chest, roll/push him to the side and roll into a kneebar. Porr guy;)

If he has me in a head lock sprawled over teh floor, ill kneel up, lock my arms in a sort of square, and push his head away, bring my leg over , trap his head , bring him down into a submission with his head trapped between my sexy legs. Or i can push against his neck forcing him to release his arm around my neck, ill take that arm, cushion it and armbar him to break his arm.

I know tons of escapes, submissions etc etc. Every skilled BJJ does. Nishbuk has his blue belt, im sure he will agree on this too. And the thing with BJJ is that there are only 5 belts, white, blue, purple, brown , black and you have to fight for your belts or be able to show enuff skill to consistently submit people in your division. Moving up is hard, it can take 8-12 yrs to get a black belt. Hell, some people take 3 yrs to get a blue belt. Cant wait till i get mine, it will be a great honor :D

and yeh, The gracies are the police of the mcdojos ROFL. Theyhave proved over and over again that their system of fighting is superior. It is extremley effective.

Gotcha. I was a little bit curious if the martial arts had a defensive/escape technique, because these videos only showed offensive techniques. I've never been in any martial arts classes or anything, but I've watched three friends and an ex-g/f move up in ranks in several different forms of martial arts and I have noticed that most martial arts don't have a ground technique. Since I learned how to fight in the streets myself, I know that the ground attack is very important. That's mainly why I was curious about this form of martial arts.
