Jogging + calves

For the last year or so, I've been having problems with my calves when I jog. They tend to get very sore and tight quickly (say, after only 5-10 mins of jogging), and the pain can cause me to stop, even though the rest of my body isn't tired.

I read somewhere that it may have something to do with my shoes, which is quite possible considering the shoes I run with are pretty old and worn out.

Any suggestions?

Jog backwards

Try to land on your heel when you do, it'll train your mind to let your knees bend properly when you run.

Yeah, seriously. Get good shoes.

Why the hell would you be that cheap? It's your OWN BODY that you are affecting. Good shoes make a huge difference compared to some rags the dog dragged in.

Have you no pride?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm guessing that it's the shoes, so I'll probably go buy a new pair tomorrow. If I still have problems, I might have a look at my running technique/stretching program and see if there is a problem there.

Be sure to go to a store that understands the needs of runners like a store that focuses on triathletes. Take in your old pair of shoes too so they can fully understand your running pattern by analyzing your tread wear. I'd also look into your pre and post running routine. Specific stretching may be in order.
