I've had a sudden interest in survivalism sneak up on me.

I read Neil Straus's book, Emergency, a few months ago, and thought that it was pretty interesting.

Little did I know that that book planted the seeds for this whole "survivalist" thing.

The more I read this website and other blogs, the more that seed starts to grow.

I'm not sure if it's a masculine need to want to be able to survive on my own in the wilderness, or the doom and gloom that everyone seems to be predicting. Or a combination of both.

To me, food production is survivalism. Aquaponics is an interest of mine, where you use fish to grow food. Then you make a worm farm to feed the fish. Worms eat any organic matter. So you could literally turn sh!t into a constant supply of food. All you'd need is some small amount of energy to move water to irrigate the plants and aerate the fish at the same time. It could be wind, solar, waterwheel, or even a beast of burden, hell maybe even a human of burden.

I think backyard gardening is going to be big in the next few years. Unemployed people have the time, and food raised yourself should always be cheaper and better than what you can buy. A garden is perfect for someone with little money and no job, which right now includes more than half of the US.

There comes a point in every episode where he munches on snakes/scorpions/beetles/bugs/piss and etc. and I cringe when he bites into it, sometimes when it is living :/. But yeah he is awesome.

It would be NUTS to risk that sort of thing for real. HE has a chopper and a hospital in the wings, if he gets sick or hurt. When it's for real, you MUST be a LOT less of a risk taker, unless you are genuinely near death from starvation or some other sort of time-pressed need. Then you have nothing to lose by catching some gut parasite, exosing self to mosquitoes, bitting flies, etc. At the least, you MUST cook all such things WELL DONE. Insects, with legs, wings and heads removed, roasted until "crunchy", then broken into a powder between your palms and added to soups/stews, are normally quite easy to capture/process and add a lot of protein to root/bark stew. :) Green veggies do very little for you but fill your stomach, nutrition wise.
