Like I said in another topic, do ****. Unless your school is like, 90% homebodies and commuters, you're just as new as anyone and just as curious to check random stuff out. After a few minutes of conversation you can easily say something as simple as "hey that hill is cool let's go check it out." Also, don't be the dude trying to define yourself in words. Many people go on this defense of their individuality as soon as they show up, taking lots of opportunities to talk about who they are, where they're from, what they're like... Skip that preamble, just go do things. Sociology wine and cheese? Why not? Buying 24s? Sure! Value Village trip? Great! Decorate your room with ripped-out pictures from magazines you found next to a dumpster. Keep popsicle sticks and glue in your room and announce that it's craft time. It really doesn't matter what you do, as long as you aren't appearing as a try-hard.
There's always a core group of dudes who spend the first 3 weeks trying to find out where the slvts are at, or how many girls they can bang. These guys are talkers. Then there are the guys saying hi to everyone, creating memorable experiences, and likely getting laid at the same time as part of the package.
